Product Description

Vespers – Cranberry, Rose, Sandalwood, Fougére Accord, Patchouli, Geranium, Cardamom, Balsam Fir, Mousse de Saxe, Bergamot

Vespers will be the first soap offered in our entirely redesigned Excelsior base, which offers supreme performance and post-shave and significantly superior hard water resistance vs. its Glissant predecessor.

Every year, the Christmas Market of Goslar, Germany opens in late November to international acclaim. Arguably the most famous Christmas Market in the world, the idyllic setting and beautiful forest of lit fir trees have captured the imaginations of artists and dreamers alike for hundreds of years.

Barrister and Mann is proud to be among them.

Vespers is the product of a specific picture, the image of a quaint mountain town in late December, snow falling gently on the peaked roofs, lights twinkling in the square. As one of the historic meeting places of Lower Saxony, we felt it necessary to incorporate our legendary version of Mousse de Saxe (“Saxon Moss”), in all its velvety darkness, into any fragrance representative of the village. Onto this we layered cranberry, cardamom, balsam, and a fern accord for a spicy-jammy-forest character. Patchouli, rose, sandalwood, and bergamot round out the rough edges to produce a scent one might expect to waft from a merrymaking hall on a chill evening. Vespers is the ultimate comfort scent for the dark months and we’re very excited to release it this winter.

Performs great, and leaves you feeling fresh. I like the scent, but I have to take one star away for the description being a little inaccurate. I was really excited for a Christmas scent with cranberry, but no matter how many times I come back to it, I can’t detect any cranberry at all. Instead, the scent reminds me of taking a winter coat out of storage and going Christmas tree shopping with my dad. A great memory, and a wonderful scent, but not the one I was hoping for.

Okay. Saying this new formula is improved is like saying, “Yeah, I guess my old Maybach was KINDA fast…” Yes, Excelsior is noticeably improved, but the B&M baseline is already so high the improvement is essentially moot. I tip my hat to Will for exploring the outer limits of shave soap performance nonetheless. (Also, as I am no fan of croaps, I thank him for producing what is described as a harder-soap version of the Reserve base.) The scent is complex and lovely — exactly as described. Honestly it is not my favourite B&M as I look for a bit of intimacy in scent; for those who lean in close. Cologne Russe, Baudelaire, Promises — these are the real B&M masterworks for me. In spite of the presence of Mousse de Saxe, Vespers is more of a “room freshener” scent — it’s for public consumption. Still, people seem to love it and, indeed, so do I. It’s a strong scent and just the soap is intense enough for me to smell Vespers all day.
