Product Description

In the modern man’s life, there are few things that he can count on. One, of course, is taxes, but with creative enough accountant, that leaves the two other constants in big-city living: Johnny Depp on bus stop fragrance ads and that well-dressed, meticulously coiffed gentlemen are likely going to be wearing that now-ubiquitous scent. From savage man-buns on mass transit to bros in the boardroom, Taxes is the scent that anyone and everyone will notice…because they won’t have a choice in the matter. It’s the law.

I’ll admit, I was dying to try Scott’s Icarus base.
This has a mild cologne scent, and I imagine it was taken after the scent Johnny Depp lends his name to, given the description. I would rate scent strength at 3-4.
Like Scott’s first and second generation soaps, this produces and extremely thick and slick lather. Like the first generation soaps and unlike the second, the puck is fairly hard and the brush can be loaded directly. Although the Icarus base is an “improvement,” I would say that ALL his soaps perform beautifully, such that the price vs. performance should be kept in mind.
My one comment would be that the soap may be almost TOO slick, to the point it is hard to grasp the brush handle, and you have to rub some alum on you fingers. Also, it could lead you to think your skin is bullet-proof when it isn’t. However, if you can live with that (I could) you will enjoy this soap.

The only thing I do not like about this soap is the name. I don’t want to think about taxes while I’m shaving.
I crossed it out with a sharpie and have re-named it to: “Depper Dan”
This is my first use of the Icarus base. Seems to be a bit “creamier” than the Bison tallow base.Very good shave and post shave feel. It is a bit harder than the bison tallow base which is more of a croap. I tried scraping out some of this Icarus base and putting it into a loading bowl but it tends to stay chunky and is hard to dissolve. Next time I’ll load directly from the tub. The scent is kind of a grassy cologne. Very nice.
