Additional Information

Ingredients:

Mango Butter, Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil, Castor Oil, Avocado Oil, Coconut Oil, Soy Wax, Candelilla Wax

Ingredients/Additional Info

Mango butter – mango butter is a light soft butter extracted from the kernels of a mango seed. Mango butter helps hair and skin retain moisture and promotes cell growth.
Shea butter- shea butter is a thick butter that becomes liquid at body temperature. Shea butter is loaded with vitamins and helps lock moisture into both hair and scalp preventing dandruff.
Jojoba oil – jojoba is actually a liquid wax that is nearly identical to the oils that your body produces to keep the skin and hair moist. Jojoba oil helps condition the hair and leaves it looking shiny and healthy. Jojoba is commonly used in hair treatments and conditioners.
Castor oil – castor oil has long been used to prevent hair and promote growth. The natural anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties of castor oil help prevent hair loss caused by pathogens and micro-organisms. Castor oil viscous consistency also makes it a common treatment for split ends.
Avocado oil – avocado oil is an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids as well as vitamins a, d and e. The antioxidants in avocado oil help promote healthy cell growth and reduce signs of aging.
Coconut oil – due to its unique fatty acid structure, coconut oil is able to penetrate the hair shaft and help hair rehydrate. Coconut oil also prevents breakage in hair that has not yet rehydrated.
Soy wax – soy wax is actually fully hydrogenated soy bean oil. Soy wax is used in Dr. Jon’s Damn Fine pomade to hold your hair while giving it a natural, smooth look.
Candelilla wax – candelilla wax helps make our pomade more firm and hold the softer, conditioning ingredients together. Candelilla wax is commonly used in place of beeswax in vegan products.

Four stars for this only because after having used the Duke Cannon News Anchor pomade that is market as a medium-hold product, I expected something that is called a heavy-hold product to live up to its marketing. Alas, it is closer to medium-hold. That’s not to say I don’t like the product—just the opposite, in fact. I like the hold and the volume it gives my hair, and the peppery scent complements the Black Label aftershave I’m wearing. I just think if you’re gonna sell it as a heavy-hold pomade, it should actually be a heavy-hold pomade and not a medium-hold one.

Actually trying to get this stuff out of the jar is a bit of a challenge. My D.C. pomade is easy to scoop out a thumbnail-sized bit to put in my hair. The surface of the product at least is much more solid, waxy feel to it initially, and difficult to scoop out a good-sized amount that isn’t too much. When rubbing it between my palms to go on my hair, however, it becomes quite creamy and goes in my hair just like any other pomade. I like the shine it gives my hair, I like that when it dries it doesn’t go all crusty, and that it doesn’t weigh down my hair like Duke Cannon’s pomade tends to do. The summer season will determine which pomade I use to style my hair when going out, as reviews I’ve watched say this product doesn’t take well to high heat environments.

Overall, I like the scent and the medium hold it gives my hair. It’s a good product, not great, but it gets the job done and it feels better in my hair than other brands. I think if the Dr. himself pays attention to buyer input and tweaks his formula a little, it will be much more popular. I’m not willing to write it off as others are, but it can stand some improvement. Keep tweaking it to get it better. Peace!

YMMV, but I wasn’t overly impressed. I found the pomade to come up short in a number of ways.

First, no way this is a “heavy” hold. Medium at best. I found the product to be greasy and much more like a water-based product than expected. I’ve used several other wax based pomades in medium holds that were a good bit firmer than this stuff.

Second, I found it to be quite shiny for a low shine product. Again, have used other pomades with a medium shine that appeared to have less shine than this.

Finally, and obviously most subjective, I just didn’t like the scent. Quite antiseptic and not very manly. Not what I’d call “classic barbershop” scent.

Overall, I’m disappointed and even wondering if the manufacturer accidentally put their Medium product in the wrong jar???
