Building a proper shaving lather on your face, with a brush and a traditional shaving soap or cream, is a great first step to improving your shave. However, if you want the most luxurious lather your soap or cream can possibly produce, you simply must have a lather bowl. The Fine Lather Bowl has been thoughtfully designed, from the ground up, just for this purpose.

When evaluating a bowl as a potential vessel in which to build a shaving lather, there are several criteria to consider, including:

  • Storage - your vanity real estate is limited and valuable. The Fine Lather Bowl is the first and only to support wall mounting.
  • Grip - Working with a presumably delicate item, in wet and soapy conditions, over a hard surface, and doing so on a daily basis, requires a tool that’s easy to hold on to. The handle on the Fine Lather Bowl is just right for slipping your thumb thru while it is held in the palm of your hand.
  • Texture - When making a lather, a degree of texture to your bowl aids in more quickly aerating your soap or cream. The Fine Lather bowl features low profile ribs for just this purpose.
  • Color - As you get to know the lathering properties of a particular soap or cream, you’ll appreciate the color contrast between a dark bowl surface and your pure white lather to best evaluate the existing state of said properties. All Fine Lather Bowls sport a dark colored inner bowl.
  • Brush Handling - Traditional wet shaving generally requires multiple shaving passes - which results in the need for multiple lathers as well. Between these lathers, your brush needs a home. The brush holder integrated into the handle of the Fine Lather Bowl provides the perfect place to set your brush while keeping it from sliding into the slippery lather itself.
  • Style - Lather bowls are a bulky piece of equipment when compared to other toiletries, and as such, most bathrooms are not well equipped to conveniently store such an item. Thus the bowl becomes part of your bathroom décor. Fine Lather Bowls sport two-tone, hand-dipped colored glazes for a clean and distinct look.
The Fine Lather Bowl is best used with a brush that has been pre-loaded with soap or with an almond-sized dollop of cream. It is not intended to replace a shaving mug or soap bowl for soap storage and brush loading, but to complement it.

Customer review

I bought the black with gray handle model at the 2018 Maggard's meetup. I did consider the classic Captain's Choice bowl, but I like the loop that I can hook my thumb through to prevent any clumsy accidents. This is a terrific lathering bowl. Short sides to avoid the clang clang of the brush handle, ribs to help with lathering and the right size for my hand. With any bowl having short sides, you need to be a little more careful when slinging around the lather. It's similar to shaving with my Mühle R41 - just go more carefully and everything will turn out OK. I took a good look at the bowl after seeing "Made in China" on the package. The quality control must be good because this is a nicely made piece of ceramic. The different colors don't overlap and there are no "bubbles" in the glazed surface in the bowl I purchased. It's a quality shaving accessory.

My first impression. This is way too small. I used my smallest badger brush, a 22mm whipped dog silver tip, and half of my time was used in trying to keep the lather from overflowing, instead of actually mixing it. And I know I didn't mix up too much lather, because I ran out after 3.5 passes. The brush holder part is great, and the ridges work well, and the loop lets you hold onto it really well when you're using it and rinsing it out. But they need to make it about an inch wider and about 3/4 inch deeper.

Absolutely the best lather bowl I've owned. The size is perfect and the sides are the correct height so you aren't banging your brush with every swirl.

Why do I like this one? First it holds small and large pucks of soap. Second, You can easily get a wet puck out of the bowl after you are finished. Third, the ridges in the bottom hold the puck well Forth, you can lay your brush on the groove in the handle Fifth, it lathers well- I start on the puck in the bowl then finish as a face lather Sixth, the handle is easy the hold

Customer review

This is the perfect bowl for me, it practically throws lather at me. The diameter and height are spot on, the handle holds my brush, which is a bonus. The "ring" fits my finger well and as a second bonus, there is a hole in the handle that allows me to hang it up if I want to. If I was forced to say something negative about it, I suppose that the handle may be a bit small to hold every brush in existence. It fits my Simpson very well though.
