I was really disappointed. Weak lather and absolutely no slickness to this soap. This was a surprise, given the many good reviews. It sounds like the formulation changed recently. After one terrible shave that left my skin feeling like I sanded by beard off, I threw this puck in the trash. After giving my skin a couple of days to recover, I gave Haslinger’s Sandenholz a try and it was so much better! They make a good soap, just not this one.

I have tried most of the Haslinger soaps and they all perform well and provide a nice post-shave feel. This one has a mild clean scent like Dove soap or MWF. Since I prefer the distinctive scents of Ringelblumen, Sandenholz and Meersalgen, I took some of the Schafmilch (which has almost no scent) and grated it into a bowl half-and-half with G.F. Trumper Violet, which smells great but needs help to make a decent lather. Voila – the combo works great and smells great too.

The new formulation sucks. It lacks the slickness that the previous tallow version had. it feels like it’s cleaning your face like a regular bar of soap. I also got a burning sensation when applied to the face even before shaving. The scent is very nice i think, a very fresh clean floral soapy scent. Bring back the old formula!!!

Any company that’s been around for almost 130 years has to be doing something right! I actually bought this to fit an antique shaving scuttle that used a small puck like this (The original was 2″ but 55cm will do). The soap itself is a surprisingly strong performer. It lathers effortlessly, and provides great lubricity and cushion. So feel free to use an aggressive razor and/or blade.
As far as the scent goes, it’s soap! It smells like soap! That’s fine with me. If you want a strong scent, buy an EDT. The KISS principle applies. Why does a functional thing like shaving soap have to ‘make a statement’? The only statement Haslinger has to make is, “Have a nice shave!”.
    Works for me.

This is a really great soap for sensitive skin. It has great slickness for in between passes but lacks in ability to lather a lot. It takes a while to get a cloudy lather but its still very easy to use. I keep this soap in rotation for when I don’t want any smell on my face and want a simple enjoyable shave.

Excellent shaving soap! It has a very light soapy smell to it, and it’s pretty good for sensitive skin. It forms a really rich and thick lather, and it fits nicely into any shave mug since it is rather smaller. Its as good, or better than some artisan shaving soaps, and that’s saying something!

Easy to lather, mild scent, comfortable post-shave feel. Some describe the scent as “powdery,” perhaps a bit like Dove soap, but it is quite mild, and doesn’t linger, so you can use any aftershave or other scent later if you wish and it will not clash. If you are uncertain about this scent, you might consider the “Honig” (Honey) version, also quite mild. If you prefer a more robust scent, many recommend the “SPA Sandalwood,” which I have not personally tried yet. At $8.50 for a 2-ounce puck, this is no more expensive than many of the well-known “artisan” shave soaps at $17.99 and up for a 4+ ounce quantity. The smaller size pucks also allow you greater variety in choosing other soaps. Maggards selection and service is always best-in-class.

I did notice a slight “animal” odor when I opened the puck, but so what? It dissipated after one use. Further, you have to expect any animal based product to carry some APPROPRIATE odor, like a boar brush. Otherwise, I think this soap is a marvel, particularly at the price. The scent is mild and pleasant, reminiscent of Ivory soap. Once I grated this into a larger container, lathering was a snap, yielding a very thick, shiny lather that provided exemplary protection and slip. I doubt any of that would be possible without the animal-based content. I personally frown on opinions based on a one-time test without checking for user error and think they should be taken with a shaker of salt.

Response to Ismael’s review:. You must have received a bad puck or your review is
A joke . In the past couple years, I have gone thru 2 or 3 and have NEVER smelled sheep piss. I don’t even know what sheep piss smells like!! How do you know what sheep piss smells like????? Hmmmmmm???? Sheep’s milk is about the closest thing you will get to unscented.
I buy this for two reasons….
    1) Performance. Performance. Performance
    2) I can use any of my unmatched after shaves

I just received my haslinger sheep milk soap I took it out of the box smelled it and it has a fresh clean scent I even asked my wife to smell and she liked it too, so I took the wrapper off and immediately it smelled like sheep pee..I couldn’t belive it I was wondering if maybe it was from the lanolin Idk I heard such great reviews I decided I should just try it anyway so I did and what I can tell you is that it is one of the slickest soaps I have ever tried but I don’t wanna be smelling like sheep pee so it’s most likely going in the trash.

This is an addendum to a previous review from June. I have been using this soap for about a year. So you know where
I’m coming from,,,,I’m a bowl latherer. Haslinger sheep milk soap is fabulous. The lather is thick, creamy, and protective. I can use any after shave I want because it is so lightly scented. If you use it a lot, you will go thru those 2 oz. Pucks pretty quickly. I always have a few on hand. Btw, the lather is so dense, you will enjoy the shave more with an open comb razor.

One of the best soaps out there, quality is second to none. Very easy to lather, performance during and post shave is excellent. Schafmilch is one of my top 5

First of all, I was surprised just how small this puck was when I received it, but the price is certainly right. This soap whips into a lather with great slickness and cushion. This is truly a very nice soap. As for the scent, there isn’t much of anything other than being subtle and smelling clean, and that’s the only reason I dropped 1 star from the rating. I definitely do not have buyer’s remorse with this soap.

I have extensively tested, side by side, Haslinger Schafmilch and Mitchell’s Wool Fat.
The performance of Haslinger Schafmilch has won hands down!
When it comes to scent though, MWF wins. That being said…
I base my soap purchases mainly on performance, especially since the aftershave splash is what you smell afterwards. Therefore, Haslinger has won my loyalty. I will never be without Schafmilch in my rotation.

The lather has no cushion, so I threw it away. At least, I’m only out $9 by it. What courage the Maggard family shows in allowing negative reviews. A lot of websites don’t have such courage. It seems like a bath soap to me, not a shaving soap.

Amazing stuff: easy to lather, slick, protective, clean scent, outstanding face-feel after your shave…I shred 2 pucks and press them into a tin…outstanding! If you’ve never tried this soap- do yourself a favor and give it a go. I’m guessing you’ll turn into a fan like me. Thanks to Maggard’s for adding this legend into their lineup…sehr gut!!

I just shaved with this soap today. I have to say it is a lathering beast. It is the best out of my rotation of 8. I use it every other shave. Another plus, it leaves your face moisturized. I like the fact that the scent, is almost non existent. I can then choose any aftershave I want.

    Omega barber pole synthetic brush
    Gillette green blade
    J’s Sloan pre-shave oil
    Lucky Tiger face tonic/after shave
    Fine Snake Bite after shave
Floid Amber after shave (for scent)

Talk about a barbershop shave experience and a bbs shave……This was it.
I also highly recommend the Lucky Tiger Face Tonic. I use it with every post shave. Good stuff.

I think I found a wet shavers combo nirvana. BUY THIS SOAP!!!!
Btw, that little puck is very dense and goes a long way. A bargain at 8 bucks.

This is the only Haslinger soap I’ve tried and, after several uses, I have to say that it does out-perform many other great soaps. Scentwise, I was on-the-fence at first, but now I find that I associate that fresh, clean, unique aroma with such a good shave that I enjoy it everytime, Permanently in the rotation…just might be my desert island soap.

Really like this soap. I have very sensitive skin. It is especially difficult to manage when I travel. I bought this soap to travel with. It has excellent foaming ability, nice mild fragrance (that is not a basic ivory soap type scent), excellent slickness, and leaves my face hydrated. Slightly pricey for the small puck you get wrapped in plastic, but I will be buying more. Worth the price!

Excellent soap. The lather is luxurious and smooth, very gentle on sensitive skin. I personally can’t smell anything in terms of scent, I haven’t got a good sense of smell. I’m definitely recommend this one, and purchase it again.

This is simply a outstanding soap. Think Mitchell’s wool fat, only much, much better. It’s so easy to lather, thick yogurt like texture, enough on any brush for 3 passes. Post shave is fabulous, you may find you don’t need any type of aftershave lotion or balm. Try one puck and you’ll be convinced. Once again, simply a outstanding product!

Greatest soap ever. The scent is questionable. But i loved the performance and the post shave left my face extremely soft. Will always buy
