Product Description

The MR1 is a short knurled handle razor with a satin finish solid stainless steel handle.

Quality materials and a great price – it is difficult to go wrong with a Maggard Razors DE. These traditional double edge safety razors are ideal for the beginner, while seasoned wet shavers will appreciate the high quality handles and smooth shaving heads.

Heads: We now offer 4 different heads to choose from. Each comes with its own shaving characteristics.

  1.  The V3 Standard (2): This head is available in Chrome, Gray, or Black Finish. Best for beginners, this head offers a mild-moderate shave with excellent efficiency. Shaves just as well as many of the big name brands with no noticeable difference in quality
  2. The V2 Open Comb: Another great option for beginners, the V2 Open comb shaves nearly identical to the Parker 24C/26C heads. Super comfortable, and super efficient – this heads gives the results of the aggressive razors without any of the harshness.
  3. The V3A Aggressive: This head is available in Gray, or Black Finish. Enthusiasts and those looking for a more aggressive razor to plow through the toughest of beards may opt for the V3A – a highly efficient shaving head that offers plenty of blade exposure. With some time and skill we feel many will enjoy this head. Comes in a beautiful matte gray plating finish.
  4. The Maggard Slant Head: Released in September 2016, our new Slant Razor Head is a great way to try out a slant head design without breaking the bank.

Most of the Maggard Razors line come equipped with solid 303 stainless steel handles. The heads of the entire Maggard line are chrome plated cast zinc alloy.

Quality Control:
We have visually inspected every single razor for manufacturing flaws. Many heads we test fit a blade to ensure blade exposure and gap consistency. You won’t find any bubbled up plating or overly rough edges on your new razor. The heads thread smoothly, and on every razor we have shave tested, each one was consistent in shaving from both sides of the blade. We stand behind these razors – so if you find a flaw that affects your shave, simply contact us and we will resolve the issue!

Handle Compatibility:
Our safety razors use standard threading that is compatible with almost all other 3 piece razors (Edwin Jagger, Merkur, Muhle, Gillette, iKon, Above the Tie, just to name a few).

Shave with it, enjoy it, and remember, this is a budget razor! It is cheap enough to buy one for all of your friends and help expand our community. This is the reason we’ve made these available and the reason for their great success!

Great razor, amazing customer service, lightning fast shipping, what more could ya want?!

This is the razor i got from the starter kit last summer and i get excellent shaves out of it using Astra blades. It took me a while to realize the handle is stainless steel which is incredible at this price range. My V3 shows a little wear and tear but the handle doesn’t look impressed. With that in mind it isn’t a stupid idea to grab a few more heads to try, or shell out for a stainless steel head to last a lifetime. Thank you for this sweet deal.

Maggards is basically selling you a gorgeous STAINLESS handle with REAL knurling, not the fake “for-show” stuff that comes on your so-called entry-level.overpriced junk that Merkur is currently making. I ordered the V3 head to go with the MR1 and am one happy customer. Read on for a little history.

I started out using a cheap VDH short handle that Target was selling for $10 on sale, really weird combination of aggressive blade angle with little actual blade exposure. It was fine to start with but frustrating when trying to remove only a days worth of growth and struggling. Next I tried the Merkur 34c and boy what a hunk of junk that was, thankfully I was able to return that paperweight in time. It couldn’t place the blade straight, the knurling was useless, and it was only a smidge more aggressive than the VDH.

I figured for what Maggard’s was charging, it wouldn’t be horrible if it was equal to the Merkur in performance for half the price. I can say that it is a FANTASTIC combination and one I am proud to use on a daily basis. This is no “cheap” razor folks, this is high quality gear for a great price. Perfect blade exposure/angle for a beginner/intermediate shaver who likes sharp blades like Feathers and Astra SP’s. It’s a great feeling to find something that makes you feel content and not endlessly searching for something better. You don’t need to spend a lot for a great shave. Here’s an awesome shave for me:

    Maggard MR1/V3
    Astra SP Blades (100 pack)
Tabac Shave Soap (or stick if you prefer)
    Omega 10066 Boar Brush
Your Drug Store Aftershave of Choice (I love Brut and Aqua Velva Musk)

For less than $70 you can shave like a king with the coin of a pauper for 6-12 months depending on how often you shave. If you are new to shaving I would get the MR1/V3 as your first DE razor and it may just last you a long while. Stay away from Amazon, go with a real shop like Maggards. Very fair prices, knowledgable people, fast shippers, and they have some great stuff no one else has, like the Maggard MR1/V3.

Wow! I chose the V2 open comb head option. *I VERY STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS HEAD.* This is a very impressive razor at any price. At Maggard’s price, it is a great bargain too.

My measurements: Handle: 53g, 79mm. Guard plate: 21g. Cap: 15g. Total length (assembled, with a blade): 88mm. Blade gap: .010″ (.25mm).

The V2 head is very well designed: The blade gap is tiny, providing a very mild shave, but the razor head is designed in such a way that the blade end gets under the whiskers and gets the job done in spite of the small blade gap. I have thick, fast-growing, shave-resistant whiskers and problem areas on the neck, and this razor gave me a great shave, with no real problems at all. The first pass resulted in a “good enough” shave, and further passes resulted in a smoother shave without scraping.

The Maggard MR1 handle was also great. I turn my razor often while shaving, so I like a handle with a good grip — the MR1 didn’t let me down (and, thanks to the good grip, I didn’t let it down either). I’m a bit beyond middle age, so unlike the younger folks whom we can thank for the recent resurgence in safety razor shaving, I prefer a more old-fashioned handle — one that is shorter and lighter than some of the popular handles. The MR1 fits the bill nicely. (And, for those of you who do like handles that are heavier or longer or both, Maggard has plenty of nice options that look like they’d be just as grippy as the MR1.) The only improvement I could think of for the MR1 would be to drill it out all the way through (like the Merkur three-piece handles) — this would lighten it up a bit more without making it too light, and it would make it easier to keep clean and dry.

Just received mr1 razor and couldn’t be more pleased. Haven’t used it yet however have to say this razor looks wise is on a par with Edwin Jagger razors. Absolutely flawless finish and blade sits perfectly with no wiggle or unevenness what so ever. Have to say that finish is better than the Merkurs I have. Purchase and delivery process were flawless. Would recommend to anyone looking for a quality razor at a very very reasonable price. Just go for it. You won’t be disappointed!

I bought a three pack of Maggard Heads, the V3, the V3a and the slant. i also bought a couple of clearance handles. The finish matched the slant and v3a perfectly, so those razors were built. My intent was to use the handle that came with my Gibson. The V3 + gibson handle weigh in at about 120 grams. Too heavy for me. I didn’t enjoy using it.

Then after a bit of research, I pulled the trigger on the mr1 handle. My favorite razor is the Merkur 34c HD. This handle is slightly longer, so it was my choice.

Wow, what a nice match for that head! I think i got a closer shave than the HD AND I got an irritation free shave. THE MAIN reasons the HD was my favorite was 1. irritation free and 2. the size makes it an easy tool to use. The same is true for the MR1.

I recently asked about Maggard’s V3. I was comparing the Maggard razor to the EJ89, which was the competitor to the Merkur 34C I passed onto my 18 year old (I would still like to get another 34C, as it was an excellent razor).

I have never used an EJ89, but have heard great reviews. I received the razor today, and was excited to open it. If you asked me six months ago if I would be excited about anything to do with shaving, I would have thought you were nuts. I am starting to think I am, in fact, nuts. Anyhow, the razor head is extremely well made and the handle is excellent. It is a great weight, although I had wanted the MR11 handle, and will probably get it in the future.

First, customer service. I was highly impressed with the personal and professional service I received from Maggard. I received multiple responses to my questions (some of which were probably not the brightest) from Brad and a personal response from Cassie after the order. They made me an instant fan of Maggard Razors.

Now the razor. The head is well made. I don’t see any issues with the machining and it looks fantastic. The handle is also excellent. It is easy to grip and didn’t slip with soap on my hands.

The shave. It was more aggressive than I remember the Merkur 34C to be, which is neither good nor bad. Since I have never used an EJ89, I can’t compare it to that particular razor. I probably would prefer the 34C, but the razor gave an excellent shave. I used TOBS Sandalwood and a Gillette 7 O’clock green. I took it easy and was able to get a smooth, BBS shave. I had one small nick, as I tried to go against the grain from the adams apple to the chin.

Bottom line, I highly recommend Maggard Razors. The current V3 is well made and extremely affordable.

I have been using DE razors for almost a decade. Prior to purchasing the MR1 with the V3 and V3A heads, my favorite was a gilette butterfly style that I got from my grandfather. I didn’t want to take a family heirloom overseas, so I purchased this one, and it has become my new favorite within a week. I have now owned it for over two months, and it is my go to razor.
I have sensitive skin and a heavy beard, and I need a sharp blade that is well-angled to get a good shave. The V3 head is perfect for this, along with the Gillette 7 O’clock Sharpedge blades that I use. I found the V3A to be a bit too aggressive for me, pulling more than cutting, almost as though the blade is a bit too perpendicular for my face. However, I love the V3 head. The MR1 handle is the perfect length to fit in three fingers while shaving. It’s not so short that it’s difficult to grip, and not so long as to feel unwieldy or clunky in the hand. Being of solid stainless steel, it has a good heft to it and retains heat from hot rinse water, giving a very comfortable shave.
The staff at Maggard is impeccable and polite and helpful. I refer everyone I know looking for razors or shaving supplies to them, and will definitely be buying from them again as I need shaving supplies, a new razor, birthday gifts, Christmas gifts or just because I feel like it.

I’ve been DE shaving for a little over a year now, and the MR 1 is my third DE razor. I am very satisfied with the fit, finish, and quality, but the price is truly amazing. My first razor was a RazoRock Mission, which is a fine tool in its own right, but I find that the Maggard V3 closed comb head gives me a closer shave. I also own a Fatip Piccolo, and like that razor as well, but the Maggard MR 1just gives me the most consistent and effortless shaves, day after day. It is now my daily driver, and I plan on ordering at least one more because it works so well for me. Thanks Maggard Razors!

  10. 4 out of 5

I’ve shaved with the MR1 w/ OC v.2 once and it shaves great. It’s a little more aggressive than my Merkur 33C. The handle is phenomenal. Its heavy and the knurling surpasses Merkur. It feels like a tool you’d find in your garage. If it slips, it’s your fault. The only nicks I can find with the razor are aesthetic. The chromed head has tiny dents and the gaps in between the teeth could’ve been sanded down more. If you like to stare at your razor like a mirror, this may be a problem. Otherwise, it works great.

  11. 5 out of 5

I just bought the MR 1 with an open comb head. I own a Fatip, which shaves very nicely, but I was amazed a how smooth and close a shave the MR 1 gave me. It was equal to the Fatip, but it caused far less razor burn. Also, I made sure to use the same blade and the same soap for proper comparison. Good Job, Maggard! Because of the success with the MR 1, I recently purchased a new V3 closed comb head as well. Frank M

I liked the MR1 well enough that I bought a second one! What more can you say! I have been shaving for nearly 40 years. That was 40 years of bad shaves, painful shaves, razor burn. I would NEVER shave in the morning if I would be sweating! My face would sting! Then after some false starts, stay, run away from Bali razors! Gillette techs were a big improvement. But not quite. Then in May 2015, I bought a MR1, put in a Astra blade. I started getting good shaves, clear skin. I also shaved in the morning and went outside just to sweat and have no sting!!!
Then a couple of weeks ago, got a email from Maggards, 10% off and free open comb head with razor. So I bought the second MR1. I have seen some people say that open combs are better for sensitive skin. They leave cream on face right up to the blade. Also, the more efficient cutting can mean less passes on your face. I did not care for the open comb at all. It seemed to be to much for me, left me with red spots.
I now have two closed combs in case I drop one.

Just received my new MR1 this week and couldn’t wait to give it a try. I was using a wieshi before, and though it was still a better shave than a cartridge razor, it was inconsistent with the quality of shaves. I’m fairly new to DE shaving, so all I wanted for now is a razor that I can count on to give me the same quality shave every time, and so far with the MR1 I’ve gotten just that. The awesome thing about this razor is, that I can get other heads later on down the road and use the same handle! All in all I’m very glad that I found Maggard and their wonderfully consistent razor.

  14. 5 out of 5

After doing a bit of research I chose the MR1 as my first DE safety razor. I was a bit timid on my first shave, having no idea what to expect. by the end of my shave I was fully converted to this razor. Despite my fears of taking half my face off along with my whiskers I didn’t even get one nick, The razor went very smoothly over my face, much more comfortably than my cartridge razor. To top it off it was the best shave I’ve ever had. I combined this buy with the 7 sampler pack of blades and have only used one blade but am looking forward to trying the others

  15. 5 out of 5

MR1 with Maggard open comb, goes so well together. Classic and vintage style, with some weight. Open comb is smooth, but still an open comb, so blade might come closer to skin. a great shaver for those 2-3 days growth. And with that handle, it’s just the perfect balance.

  16. 5 out of 5

I purchased a MR1 razor with closed comb about 3 months ago based upon on all the positive comments I have seen here and in multiple other locations. Since then, I have been enjoying the learning curve with DE razors and am happy with the results if have achieved. The MR1 seems to get the job well done based on my limited experience and appears to be a great value. The head is not absolute visual perfection but Maggard’s accurately describes the product and I have no regrets whatsoever. I was in the shop to make the purchase to see first hand before any decision was made. In addition, I really like the handle. Bottom line, I’m happy. Service was great. All my questions were answered and zero sales pressure. I was impressed with the operation and happy to see a local business thriving.

  17. 5 out of 5

I am impressed. I wanted another razor to go along with my Edwin Jagger DE89 Knurled. Received the MR1 for a birthday present. I wanted something with a little more grip and weight than the EJ. I got it. The finish was quite good. The stainless steel handle was very good. The only thing that concerned me was the head. The blade alignment was straight but it had a little more blade exposure on one side than the other. I was going to send it back but then thought better. I figured that it should not effect the shave so I lathered up and gave it a go. Wow, that was a nice shave, close and comfortable. In fact, that was the closest shave I ever had with an Astra blade.

  18. 4 out of 5

Are you a “good enough” guy? You know, XYZ is good enough for me. Because this is a good enough razor. It is a great bargain. Does the blade seat as nicely as a Jagger? No. Is it as shiny as a $60 razor? Nope. For most guys I would say spend a few more dollars and buy a Jagger. If you want something for your travel kit, or the cottage, this is a steal. Love the handle length and the grip, even if it feels like something from the hardware aisle. There is nothing as well made in this price range. But it is more Kia than Lexus, naturally. Good for Maggard’s for making such a good, affordable razor available. If this is your price point, this is your razor.

  19. 5 out of 5

Great razor and great service, I just wish I would have ordered it sooner. Though I’ve been shaving for 30 years now, I’m new to traditional shaving and started out with Lord L6. Nothing wrong with that razor, but after one shave with the MR1 I realized what shaving with a truly nice razor can do. Love the weight of this razor and love the look. Do yourself a favor, buy this razor. Dooo it.

  20. 5 out of 5

Yesterday, Monday, I received the MR1 and MR5 I ordered Friday, absolutely amazing! A few weeks ago I had the good fortune to receive a MR6 loaner, actually to try the handle on another razor, which I did and it did greatly improve the shave quality of both a Merkur and E J as it is one fantastic handle, but I had to try the Maggard head and I got the best, closest, most comfortable shave that I have gotten since I switched back to D E razors from straights a couple of years ago. I am no newbe to double edged razors, I was shaving with Gillette slims and fatboys when you could buy them in any drug store or supermarket for less than $20. Several years ago, my EX relieved me of a whole drawer full of them that most likely went in the trash. I have tried over 20 razors in the last few years and was not impressed with any, until I shaved with the Maggard. Until yesterday, my favorite razor out of the lot has been the Merkur 34C, but last night I tried the MR1 and the Merkur side by side with fresh Astra SPs and Proraso red and the hands down winner was the MR1, as a matter of fact I got a DFS on the MR1 side of my face in just 2 easy passes, something I have never been able to do with a Merkur or Edwin Jagger closed comb, even using Feather blades. Needless to say, the Maggard MR1 is my new favorite razor, at least until I try the MR5, MR6 and MR8 I have also purchased, that is just how impressed I am with Maggard Razors. Not only are this the best razors I have found, but the service that I received from Maggard is, by far, the best, most personal and the fastest I have ever received from any company in the wet shaving business!!!! Thanks Maggar for the best razor and the greatest service that I have found!!!

Awesome razor, and very fast shipping. Still getting my technique down, and these prices make it easy to try different products. My wife purchased everything on wish list for Valentine’s day, and everything had arrived the day before Valentine’s. Super fast shipping, and great customer service.

After comparing a few different brands for my first DE razor, I decided I would give Maggard’s MR1 a shot. I’m very pleased with their quality. The finish is great, and the razor itself is very well built. I would definitely recommend it to anyone considering it.

  23. 5 out of 5

this is a great Razor! I ordered the M1 to get the handle to use with my Muhle head, but decided to give this a try first. Wow more aggressive then my Merkur, but very comfortable. The nice thing is that this razor “sings” when you use it. The blade does seem to have a lot of wiggle room when you load it, but it does not seem to be an issue, it centered pretty easily as I tightened the razor.

  24. 5 out of 5

What a great razor at a great price! Bought this razor today and took it for a test pass under my nose, and oh boy was it ever so nice and kinda mild. Bought it for the fact that it has a stainless handle. But got blown away on how nice the head and handle combo are together. Maggard makes a great razor at a great price and cost savings. Thanks Maggard razors for such a great piece of work.

  25. 5 out of 5

I ordered one of these Maggard MR-1 razors from the Scratch and dent section because the handle is more what I was after for a Merkur head I have had for some time.
The stainless steel handle on these razors are very nice and well weighted and could easily sell for $30 just for the handle.
I shaved with this razor at first and it done a superb job. A very nice razor at an affordable price with a solid stainless steel handle. Shaves just as good as my Merkurs .
You really can not go wrong with the MR-1.
The handle with the Merkur head looks like a very expensive razor.
Well worth what I gave for the whole razor.
And to add to my review the Maggard family are very friendly people and the services are better than any other merchants on the web. I have found the only place I will shop for my shaving needs.
Fast on orders and fast on shipping.
    #1 in my book !!

    This razor is amazing!
Just received it two weeks ago gave it a try it was an awesome shave
This razor is just a bit more aggressive then ej89l it works perfect for me.
I recommend everyone pick this up for the price you cannot think about it.

I’m going to join the myriad voices lauding this product with praise and tell you, dear reader, that this product is top-notch.

This was my first DE razor, because of the price point, and I could not be happier with the quality of shave I have been receiving. It’s even gotten me a few compliments from the ladies, which is always nice even for a taken fellow such as myself.

I’m also fairly certain that the lack of irritation and flawlessly clean appearance that this leaves me with was a major contributing factor to my landing my job. Thus, I can now afford to give even more of my money away to the Maggards.

I joke, but this razor is more than worth its price, and the Maggards are a pleasure to deal with. I’ve ordered three times now from them and each time has been the most wonderful customer service experience ever. For this level of personal treatment in any business, let alone the online side of a business, is nigh on unheard of.

So here I will allow myself a brief moment to digress and go beyond just reviewing the Maggards’ flagship razor line, to reviewing the Maggards’ shop itself. Outstanding on all accounts. That is all.

  28. 5 out of 5

I just started using this razor after a few weeks of starting safety razor shaving with an old Gillette Superspeed. The MR1 left me smoother than my other razor and is a phenomenal value for the price. It’s heavier, but has a good balance to it and never felt too aggressive. It’s not as finely machined as razors costing at least 2 times as much, but this doesn’t affect performance. You will need to hold the sides of the blade when securing the handle to keep an even blade alignment, but this is not a big issue and probably common with many 3 piece razors. Overall this is a great razor to start out with and use for the long term.

I was fortunate enough to find out about Maggard razors while reading reviews for another razor. As others have noted, I received a personal confirmation email almost immediately after ordering and received the razor within a couple of business days. After a few uses I have have nothing but good to say about this razor. The quality is great. I have no doubt it will be the last razor I ever buy. I was also happy to learn that this is a small business in Michigan. As a small business owner myself, also in Michigan, it is great to be able to support another. Keep up the good work!

Smooth!!…I used this razor for the first time with a Personna Med Prep blade, Maggard’s pre-shave oil, & Coates Sandalwood shave cream – very comfortable, perfect shave with no irritation. My honest opinion of the plating quality is it’s good…time will tell if it holds up. But at this price, the performance is truly impressive….highly recommended!!

  31. 5 out of 5

I’ve had my MR1 for about three weeks now and I am very impressed by both its looks and the shave it gives. Looks great and shaves great. I have a 1958 Superspeed that I like quite a bit but have to say I prefer the MR1 over it. In addition the customer service from Maggard’s is without a doubt the best around. I ordered the razor got a thank you and confirmation email about an hour later and was shaving with the razor two days later. Highly Recommended!!!

  32. 5 out of 5

I’ve used this razor about five times now. This is my second DE, and I’m very happy with it. The balance, weight, and feel are superb. The knurled grip is perfect: it gives you a secure hold with soapy hands, but doesn’t feel like you’re holding a bastard file either. It just… fits. The head geometry is very intuitive and safe– you’re either shaving or you’re not, and it won’t bite you unless you make a mistake. I find it pairs very well with Astra SPs, very smooth and efficient. I don’t own a Merkur, but from pictures I’d say the finish looks pretty on par. I’d highly recommend this as a first and/or only razor…. as long as RAD doesn’t kick in. If it already has, then I’d recommend that you add this one to any collection. There’s a reason that Gillette made handles this long for so many years.

Had been using the MR-1 for a week now and I got to say it is great. This is my first DE razor and it is wonderful. It has given me the best shave I have. Weighted just right no need to use pressure the weight of the MR-1 is all you need. I had no trouble loading the razor blades in it. Handle is great holds good with slippery hands. I love this razor.

Great value, super fast shipping, and BBS shave on the first try. If you’re on the fence, go for it!

I recently bought a starter kit that included this razor. I’m new to the game, but with all the advice I found on Reddit’s Wicked Edge I had the best shave of my life. The MR1 is heavy and oozes quality. The chrome is flawless and I’m sure will last a lifetime. I also want to comment on the seriously fast shipping and great communication. I ordered on a Friday night, and Casie emailed that they shipped my set on a Saturday. Monday was a holiday and my package arrived Tuesday. That’s amazing. I’m about to order some more products right now.

  36. 5 out of 5

Received the MR-1 several days ago, was in mid blade on another razor, decided to wait it out, not move the blade to a different razor, I rarely change razors mid-blade . The heft & balance of the MR-1 is fantastic, the heavier handle moves the balance point out, for better control. The shave was clean, dfs in one pass. The workmanship is good, the finish great. A best buy for a beginner or a veteran.

  37. 5 out of 5

OK, I tried my new Maggard MR1 today with a Gillette 7 O’Clock Yellow. It seems to be extremely well made and has a good solid feel. The finish is superb. I lathered up with Proraso White and took off. I had a great shave with one small nick on my chin. I am certain that was pressure related on my part. I look forward to breaking myself in on the MR1. This is one of those “Best Bang for the Bucks” products! Both Casie and Brad are great to deal with. Their customer service and shipping speed is top notch.

  38. 5 out of 5

The fit and finish of this razor is surprisingly good. The mechanics and blade alignment are likewise entirely sound, and the bright chrome plating is quite appealing. The heft of this thing is amazing. It also delivers where it counts, giving a great, smooth, efficient shave. The Maggard significantly raises the bar for budget/entry level razors. And, the service from the good folks at Maggard is second to none.
At $15.95, this thing is positively off the charts in terms of value. I recommend it highly!
