Created in 1974, the traditional soap factory Martin de Candre decided to promote one of its specialties which became more and more demanded and searched for:

The shaving soap.

A product entirely fabricated at the factory with a paste like consistency. It is manufactured through a saponification process of 100% vegetal oils (olive, coconut) and potash (alkali).

This shaving soap turns into an abundant foam which “sticks” to the skin : Applied on the face, it turns into a smooth and unctuous cream like substance.

Saponification made with heat action, in the traditional way in Martin de Candre atelier, with 100% vegetal and potash oils. Thanks to its 40 years of experience, they guarantee a perfected process. This process allows excellent keeping of the soap without needing any conservatives. A luxurious, efficient and long-lasting product.

NOTE: Martin de Candre Soaps are extremely hard, and tend to "crumble" due to their extreme density and lack of water content. This means a sample of MdC might last 10+ shaves; but, it's a challenge to transfer it from your sample container into the bottom of a bowl/mug. This CAN be transferred with some effort. Just pack it down hard onto your mug/bowl with the back of a thick/sturdy spoon.

  • Each container is hand packed by a member of Maggard Razors.
  • Each 1/4oz jar will be filled approximately to the bottom of the threads.
  • The sample will be enough for several shaves!

Scent Notes:

Agrumes - Citrus essential oils (lemon, grapefruit and bergamot).

Fougere - A soft and delicate fragrance known as Fougère; a cologne made from 12 essential oils. Traditionally a green and wooden note.

OriginalThe Original or the first Martin de Candre Shaving Soap, the one we created in the 1980s. The discreet and elegant freshness of its perfume made from Lavender essential oils, Mint and Rosemary.

Rose - A soft and delicate fragrance with a base of roses essential oils

Vetyver - A delicate fragrance with a base of vetiver essential oils gives a light refreshing feel that will stay throughout the day.

Very good lather, but drying to the skin

This is a good soap that lathers easily, but the after shave feeling is of a tight, dry skin and not confortable. This is in part to the use of Coconut Oil, because the lather produced by coconut oil is very eficient in cleaning the skin, hence i can trip apart the natural oils of your skin.

Customer review

So far, I've tried samples of Vetyver, Agrumes and today I tried Fougere. I really wanted to like the Vetyver but it just isn't the scent profile I was hoping for: Guerlain Vetiver. Next I tried Agrumes and loved it, it's a clean, bright citrus scent. Today I received my sample of Fougere (that I wasn't at all sure I'd like) and it's quite nice. It has a somewhat midrange scent strength and leans more toward grassy, woody notes than to damp, decaying vegetation (like Chiseled Face Summer Storm or Catie's Bubbles Un Juor Gris). Performance is, of course, outstanding offering quality lather with great cushion and glide without much effort. One trick with the sample containers: I've found guitar picks work great for scraping out the soap, then just press it into a bowl or scuttle (credit goes to the folks at Badass Beard Care for the idea). I've always found it amusing that guys will deduct points on their reviews because they can't load their brush straight from the sample... seriously???

Hype is a dangerous thing - it creates interest and demand but also high expectations. This is the most hyped soap I have read about, but I am a bit skeptical by nature so my expectations were not crazy high. I was not disappointed. The lather was easy, smooth and fluffy (not foamy). It feels luxurious and makes for an easy, great shave. The original smells like Noxzema or maybe Proraso Green, so pleasant enough but not special. The Fougere is the star in my book, the rose is very good and the Agrumes is very mild but nice enough. The samples are a bit expensive but so is the full size soap. This seems like a soap that goes a long way (based on how long the samples are lasting) so it is not as bad a value as it first appears. At least try one sample to see what you have been missing!
