The MERKUR 23C was originally developed in the ‘20s. Its reliable quality makes it a timeless classic: the long handle and straight foam edge ensure a particularly smooth shave. The MERKUR specific spacious blade gap allows a high soap flow and also makes cleaning noticeably easier.

Material: Brass handle, die-casted zinc razor head, galvanized surfaces, bright chrome-plated
Product Details: Closed comb, straight
Locking system: Short screw, three-piece safety razor
Dimensions: 1.62 in x 1 in x 4.15 in

Made in Solingen, Germany

MATERIAL
The head of the safety razor is manufactured using the zinc die-casting process since it creates instruments with maximum precision even for complex shapes. In order to ensure a comfortable weight distribution, we only use brass for the handle. The chrome finish protects the razor from corrosion and underlines the high-quality design.

PRODUCT DETAILS
A safety razor with a closed comb is the all-rounder for classic wet shaving. Intuitively, you will feel the best shaving angle for your safety razor and immediately achieve ideal shaving results. The generous blade gap allows high soap flow protecting the razor head from clogging with cut hair or lather residue.

This is widely recommended as one of the best razors to start wet shaving with and that's exactly why I bought it. It was the perfect introduction with the long handle feeling similar to a cartridge razor. 5 years and another 5 safety razors later, I still find myself reaching for it for about 75% of the time.

I like the Merkur 23C. The length, weight and balance are perfect for someone new to double edge safety razors. Yet is also suitable for experienced shavers as well. My only complaint is the the chrome plated zinc alloy head doesn't last. After a few years the chrome starts flaking off & the zinc metal corrodes rapidly. This is a problem with all the plated zinc alloy heads. Still I would recommend the Merkur 23C aka the Long 180. You'll get your money's worth out of it.

So many websites refer to the Merkur 23C (aka 180) as a good "starter razor" for "wetshaving beginners,"... However, I have been using this razor exclusively for almost 5 years now, and it simply provides great shaves without being too mild or aggressive -- and I have used different blades like Merkur, Astra SP, and Feather. In particular, I love the long handle (I have broad hands,) the "knurled" no-slip grip, and the fact that it isn't too heavy (you can still let its weight do the work and not apply any pressure during passes.) Also, I have a rather thick stubble (both in terms of density over an area of facial skin as well as individual hair thickness) and the Merkur 23C shaves it very well. Of course, proper prep and technique are crucial -- I use pre-shave oil, a good cream lathered directly on my face with a badger brush, and 3 passes (WTG/XTG/ATG.) Rinse with warm water, then cold water, gently pat dry, apply some witch hazel, let evaporate, then some after-shave lotion. Then let the ladies swarm!
