This was actually my very first DE razor the wife bought me almost 25 years ago the guy at the knife shop told her it would help with the razor burn and irritation I always got from shavings with a cartage razor. He was right and she even splurged for a really high dollar Silver Tip Badger Hair brush that I still use today. I started of with the Merkur blades and the were great used them for years then I started using a Astra Platinum because I could by a 100 for real cheap it is now my go to blade. It finally got a tiny nick in the chrome on the guard. I then started shopping for another, Ikon Slant is not the same but I still use it from time to time. The Above the Tie Slant is the closest to the style of this razor and I use it about every other day 3 at the most but it is not a cheap razor at all but I’m guessing if this little pot metal and chrome razor is still in the mix after having it for over 25yrs the Above the Tie should last the rest of my life and be past on for generations to come. Don’t be afraid of the slant bar give a try if you have a course beard and sensitive skin take your time at first until you get confidant with it and you will not be sorry you did.

Since the Merkur 34c is one of my favorite razors (I use it a LOT), when I wanted to buy my first slant razor opting for the Merkur 37c was not that difficult of a decision. Hence, I am not one bit surprised that after using this shaving weapon once, I already can tell how amazing it is. Of course, that might have much to do with the other gear I used as well.

I just shaved with this thing this morning, after receiving it from Maggard’s yesterday (there was a delay in shipping – NOT Maggard’s fault – usually I get my gear in 2 days). I used the 37c (feather blade), Catie’s Bubbles Le Piment De La Vie Soap, Maggard’s brush, and Stirling Sandalwood AS splash. With the first swipe of the razor, I knew I had a winner. This thing sliced through my 3 day stubble with such ease I was actually alarmed. Within 2 passes, my face was completely smooth. I would call that success. After I rinsed my face and applied the AS I got dressed for work, sprayed on my favorite cologne (Bvlgari Man in Black), and left the house feeling (and smelling) like a freakin’ rock star.

And, as usual, Maggard’s rules in every way imaginable.

Just a fantastic razor. A pleasure to use and look at.

I got a bad one, Merkur quality control failure.

As always Brad and Casie are great and I’m very sure they would have helped me if I had requested such.

I have a Merkur 20C which has served me well. I have moved on to more aggressive razors and have been getting great quick shaves from my Razorock Stealth Slant and my Muhle R41. My shave routine is quite maxed out in order to handle these prime cutters without nicks or noteworthy razor burn. I wanted to add this 37C in hopes of finding another favorite.

Well after 7 bad initial shaves (nicks and burn every time) I knew I was well past my “figure it out” phase. Close examination revealed that the blade edges were quite wavy and there was an internal quality problem. No amount of careful reassembly fixed this. The base plate has 2 clamping surfaces that hold the blade tight to the top cap. There was unremoved die cast flashing extending above these clamping surfaces. All 4 corners had either a ridge of flashing, a lump of flashing or both. My Dremmel tool, a magnification glass and significant time removed these spots and buffed them up smoothly.

The blade edges now look as I believe they were intended too. I immediately got 3 nice aggressive shaves without nicks and with much less razor burn each time. I lost my chrome plating in a couple internal spots but I think I have a real keeper now, instead of the plain bad razor I received.

I don’t need any compensation. I only want to warn others to keep an eye out for this problem and to pass back my experience in hope that Maggard’s and Merkur might realize there is room for QC improvement at the Merkur factory.

I have noticed many very good reviews for this razor with a much smaller amount of bad reviews. This could be due to inadequate routine/technique or quality control issues, as I just found. I am confident that this review is fair and accurate.

I’m a life long wet shaver and have been using the standard Merkur 34c hd for a long time but wanted to try the slant version as I often go 4 or 5 days between shaves. I ordered this razor a week ago and left my beard and head “go” (I shave both!) just to have some substantial growth to give the slant a good test. Today gave it a trial run with my favorite blade and would have to say quite simply…Amazing! It will be my “go to” razor from this day forward when I have substantial growth! It eliminates the need to use an electric trimmer to knock it down first, while providing a smooth, super close shave! No pressure needed, just let the razor do the work! Thank you Maggard razors, as usual, for providing great service all the way around!

I bought this razor because I wanted to try a slant razor. I read all of the reviews of how aggressive this razor was and how this razor would peel ribbons of skin off of all but the most seasoned wet shavers. I approached my first shave with some nerves and questions about how recently I had received my last tetanus shot. After beginning my shave I quickly found out that this razor is not aggressive at all. It is only slightly more aggressive than my MR22, but it is a very efficient shaver. I have used this razor multiple times per week for a month now and have yet to nick myself, but I have always gotten a great shave. I love the two piece design, but wish that the handle was just a little longer with slightly more weight. Do not believe the hype this razor can easily be used by both beginning shavers and veterans as a daily shaver and is a great value in the slant razor market.

I’m sure the sonic boom of another fast Maggard delivery startled my neighbors, but this razor disappointed me at first. I have a tough beard but the 37C was not quite as close as my EJDE razors, my Merkur Futur, and Merkur 1904 41C. Then I put a Feather blade in it and it was a different razor. An good as my other razors for closeness and comfort. Im rubbing a BBS shave right now. I’m going to enjoy seeing how different blades perform in it. I love the design, the knurling is great, the handle is perfect for my grip, and I’m now a fan of the two-piece design. The 34C would probably have been just as good a choice for me, but I expect the slant will show its colors when I have 2 or 3 days growth. YMMV.

Tired of a razor burnt neck? Buy this razor and put a sharp blade like Personna Lab in it. Many think this is the big bad wolf because it’s a slant. Wrong. This baby is actually quite mild but amazingly efficient. I’ve spent way more money than I’d like to admit on razors and this is my favorite. BBS every single shave, ZERO irritation and the shave is smooth as silk. Dare I say this is a perfect newbie razor, too. I adore it. There’s certainly a reason for all of these 5 star reviews.

I just received this razor today and used it for the first time. This is the most amazing shave that I ever had. After just two passes, my face was baby smooth. I have over 20 razors including some from Merkur, mule and fattip and this is my favorite. I used it with a merkur blade which is usually not good but I will try it with a Gillette silver blue to see how much better the shave will be if that is possible. Highly Recommended!

Fantastically made razor, just got this in last week. I was worried about it not being as “efficient” “aggressive” as everyone has made it out to be. it is and more, I have a very tough thick beard I can soak my face for 5 hours and my beard still feels like copper wire and this thing just took it off with no problem at all. def. recommend this to gents with thick coarse beards with sensitive skin like myself. as always maggard’s does an exceptional job of shipping quick and fast.

I bought this lil bad boy (Merkur37C) today, and the hype is true. This thing is AWESOME! I got back to my place tonight and decided to give this thing a Test Shave. Well it sheared off my days worth of growth and it laughed at me. It handled it with no problem. And to top it all off, no irritation. This lil Bad Boy is giving my 46 Aristocrat a Run For Its Money, Its my favorite razor, but it seems like thats gonna change really soon. I just need to shave a few more times with the 37C to find out. Its Aggressive, Yes. But not Too Aggressive. If you have a tough beard this baby is for you, The best way to describe it would be like a hot nife though butter. Or the fact that it should come with a button, “That Was Easy!”

I wanted a more aggressive razor and decided to try this slant…I can’t say its more aggressive but it just seems to glide thru the whiskers with very little effort giving a great smooth irritation free shave….no nicks weepers or razor burn….great razor great price and great service from Maggards!!! I may have to buy another as when my son sees it he’ll want to try it and sure he’ll want his own! I can’t really describe how this slant glides across my face compared to the normal razors but its great!!! Would highly recommend anyone getting this razor, I’ll bet you’ll love shaving with it!!!

First slant I’ve owned or used, and it’s amazing. It acts as a guillotine to the hair! The finish is superb as well, the chrome has held up wonderfully. It’s been sitting in the shower for months, and nobody would be the wiser to that. It’s gr8 m8, 8 out of 8.

I’ve had this razor in the passed, but there’s no denying I had to have this back in my den. I personally missed this one! I love this razor, & people usually say how aggressive it is, but rather… I personally feel it’s a very efficient cutter, not necessarily aggressive in my book. I highly recommend this slant to a season veteran wet-shaver with good technique, angel, & of course no pressure when using this bad boy! 🙂

If you want a close shave very fast with less strokes & less effort… this is the razor for you. Men with sensitive skin can also certainly benefit from this razor, also remember less strokes = less Irritation.

As a noob to shaving with a real razor, I followed advice & bought a Merkur DE 39? Was ok, but
Blades didn’t last too well for me. Tried the open tooth version next, somewhat better. Then I read about the slant blade & gave it a try. Sweet spot! Better shave with less work, longer blade life. Just have to take it slow & easy or it might bite ya. Wished I’d gotten this one first, would have saved some $$.

I bought this razor a few months ago and it is my everyday razor. I rarely get nicked. The razor seems less irritating and has been better for me overall because I tend to get ingrown hairs. It doesn’t seem to shave quite as close as my old Gillette, but I only do about three passes. I shave daily and now comfortably.

This razor is great for trouble spots such as the neck and adam’s apple areas. Do NOT belive the horror stories about this razor’s aggressive tendencies because they’re simply not true. Just simply forget that it’s a slant and take long strokes and you’ll get one of the best if not the absolute best shaves of your life. I recomend using the Gillette Silver Blue DE blades with this razor if you want a baby smooth shave after 2 passes.

I have been a DE user for several years, but I have always had trouble. I have coarse, dark hair and sensitive skin. DE was easier on my skin than the old cartridge razors, but it was still pretty bad when I would have to shave several days in a row. I had heard that slant bar razors are better for this particular situation, and boy were they right! There is a decent learning “slant” (pardon the pun), because the blade is more exposed than other razors I have used. However, this is easily mitigated with some caution at first. I have now had a handful of shaves and feel like I’m getting used to it! There is a good amount of heft to the razor, and with the correct angle it practically does the job itself. I have been experiencing far less razor burn than I used to, and with a much easier time of it too. I HIGHLY recommend this razor to those who have trouble with irritation post shave.

Phenomenal razor!!! I am a collector of safety razors and make it a point to try each one at least once and a few I keep in a rotation but not after this razor, “There can be only one.” My beard is thick with different growth patterns and its stiff as barbed wire but the 37C went through a 4 day growth like an atom bomb through a forest. The 37C is a very smooth comfortable cutter. I have to admit I did make a couple of knicks but I was just excited over the new razor and the fact I had went to the Maggard store instead of ordering on-line made it all more than worth while.

I”ll be honest, I am normally a straight razor guy. However, when I’m in a hurry and I need an extremely close shave, this slant is my go-to razor. It’s heavy and aggressive which is absolutely ideal for my tough beard. I no longer even bother with my normal DE, since the slant provides better shaves with the same amount of effort. If you have coarse, tough facial hair then this slant is the way to go, especially for the price.

I am a newbie, so I wanted to review this slant as a way of letting people know that they should not be afraid of slant razors.

I shaved for just over a month with a Merkur 33c, and after reading and spending too much time on the forums, I became intrigued with the idea of a slant razor. I read the warnings about waiting six months, or avoiding the aggressive slant razors, but I liked the idea of a more efficient shave – the comparisons to the angled cut of the guillotine also appealed to the history teacher in me!

Anyway, I decided to try out a slant last week, and let me say that the results are excellent. My technique is no doubt not fully developed, but even for this newbie, this razor has made a difference. I had one bad shave – the first one – I was too eager to try it out, and after that each day has been better. The feedback provided by the razor has helped me learn my beard growth pattern, and patient use of very little pressure has yielded excellent results.

If you want to try out a slant, do it with this one, the price is right and there is no reason to fear it.

    Highly Recommended!
