This is one of the TOBS shaving creams that seems to have high reviews. Granted, the jar of shaving cream that I used seemed to have the original soap formulation which produced a fantastic lather but I found the scent, while rather pleasant is very strong and overpowering and not unlike washing machine powder for clothes, not like sandlewood in my opinion. It’s not for me.

Again like many reviews… HOW do people like the scent of this stuff? It smells nothing like any of the sandalwoods i’m used to. I was expecting something along the lines of proraso, or the art of shaving sandalwood… NOPE. Super spicy, powdery musty awful is what I get.
It smells a lot like powdered deodorant. Baby diapers. Cheap musk.

Otherwise, the price, the tub, the speed of lather and actually performance is phenomenal… just pick a different scent!

I use Proraso Sandalwood soap and always wanted to try TOBS sandalwood based on reviews. It lathers descent, but I would not say it has anything over Proraso in that department. As far as scent it reminds me of some kind of shampoo or something, not bad just not my thing. If you want a good sandalwood, I would recommend Proraso.

This product is perfect for the beginner, as well for the seasoned shaving pros out there.
    Quick to Lather
    Thick in application
    Great Scent: Not over powering
    Easy clean up.

Cons: May dry quickly if not enough water is left on the brush other than though this is a great shaving soap.

I love Sandalwood, but with this soap, I can’t smell any. I smell pungent, synthetic, detergent-like soap … with some powdery floral notes as if it wasn’t bad enough already. Okay, I concede that here, “bad” just means, not my type of scent. But it’s just that I’m repulsed by it. I can’t imagine why it’s so popular. It is definitely more of a feminine scent to me.

Here’s why it’s so bad. I shaved with it one (the only) time, and then went to work. It smelled like I had dunked my face in what you get when a powdery grandma loses a fight with a jug of truck stop hand soap. And it stayed on me for hours! Hours, people! Probably four! By far, the longest-lasting scent on any soap I’ve tried and it happened to be the worst smelling (to me).

A little does go a long way, so it’s not a bad value. But there are much better ones out there for this price. This list is sorted by price, lowest first.

    * The performance of Col Conk’s soap, like Bay Rum, is just as good as this and it costs $3.70 for 2.25 oz, and will probably last longer.
    * Haslinger makes 60g pucks of hard soap that make lather just as slick (or better) and will probably get you as many shaves as this. And they’re only $8-9 a puck. Now, their Sandalwood much more authentic.
    * Proraso is another croap that lathers just as well (I can speak for the Red), and has a fabulous actual Sandalwood scent, for just $10 or so.
    * Cella is an almond scent that is around $11 and performs as good or better.
    * The Latha line from Barrister and Mann is so much better than TOBS, and it is a few dollars cheaper… and will probably last longer. And they have a Sandalwood too.
    * Dapper Dragon is a better performer than TOBS, IMO and costs less.
    * Henri & Victoria’s base is top notch, years ahead of TOBS and they cost less too.
    * Fine Accoutrements makes some hard puck soap that is super slick and their Sandalwood scent is more authentic as well. As a hard puck, it will give you more uses than TOBS and … you guessed it… it also costs a few dollars less. Some complain that it leaves their skin a little dry after the shave, but I use a post-shave balm, and have never had any problems.
    * Stirling soaps gives you so many scent choices, though I don’t really think they have a good authentic Sandalwood, either. They are a few dollars less than TOBS, but are more slick, and you get way more for your money.
    * Mike’s Natural is also a great value for $13 and gives much better lather than TOBS. And it’s harder, and you get 5 oz, so it will surely outlast a tub of TOBS.
    * WSP is cheaper, just as good of a performer, and will give you more shaves.
    * Catie’s Bubbles is better than TOBS in terms of performance, and it beats it in cost and scent choices.
    * Mickey Lee Soapworks is cheaper, just as good of a performer, and will give you more shaves.
    * Reef Point Soaps is cheaper, a better performer, and will give you more shaves.
    * Captain’s Choice has a much more authentic Sandalwood, performs just as good, and costs a bit less.
    * Chiseled Face is less and it performs better and has some amazing and truly manly scents.
    * Soap Commander’s performance is top notch and can give super slick lathers, even in hard water, and may cost just a little more, but you get more for your money than TOBS since they give you a generous 6 oz.
    * Dr Jon’s is a better performer for a better price.
    * Barrister & Mann has a few entries that are cheaper than TOBS and it is far superior in lather quality and will give you more shaves than Taylors.

Anyway, the performance is good, and the strength of the TOBS soaps is that they are quick and easy to lather, so may be a good option for someone starting out. I personally like the scent of Jermyn St. or St James a lot better.

At first I thought the smell was off-putting and smelled like old people straight out of the sample container. After my first shave I still wasn’t convinced but I did get a sense of nostalgia regarding an old English barbershop. Performance was very good though with lots of glide and slickness. Not much cushion really but I could care less about that as long as it protects and is slick. A few shaves later and I absolutely love it! I went ahead and purchased a full tub. It’s a great masculine scent with woody and floral notes. Perfect for colder months though I think it’s a classic for any time of year really.

No wonder this cream is so well regarded and its history is deep within the wet shaving world.

    Don’t hesitate to buy this!

It performs exceedingly well, lathering quickly, good feel on the face, leading to a very nice shave. It’s not my favorite sandalwood and sometimes I am just not in the mood for the scent. It’s sandalwood with some other elements, long-lasting. To my nose it is not “mediciney” as some have described but I think I know what they mean, it’s not a woody sandalwood smell like I prefer. Still I enjoy it enough to keep it in rotation.

What can be said that hasn’t already? All TOBS products rock. My fave scent is their Jermyn St, but this is a very pleasant sandalwood. Smells great, lathers great, and will last a long time! And, Maggards rocks, but you already knew that.

My favorite cream , love it .

I’m a little torn on this one. I think the first traditional wet shave soap I ever bought was TOBS lavender. That was about twenty years ago, and I remember that I really loved that soap. Lately I have been on a bay rum, and sandalwood kick, and I know that this particular sandalwood is highly regarded, so I decided to give it a whirl. Reading the other reviews here, I have to agree with several points that have been made. My initial impression of the scent was that it didn’t smell like sandalwood at all. At least not what I think sandalwood should smell like. I got a very medicinal soapy kind of scent. Someone else on here said that it smells like old people, and although I probably would not have said it in my review, I have to admit that it was the first thing I thought when smelling this. It is not that it smells bad, just not at all what I was expecting. Performance wise, I don’t know if I have ever had a soap lather up as quickly as this one. It is a very soft cream, so just a light tap with the tips of my brush gave me an abundance of lather for three passes. The lather was very cushioney, and great razor glide. Performance wise, this is a winner. Scent wise, I would probably try something different next time.

I ordered the TOBS sample pack from Maggard Razors and was glad I did, I tried all the scents and by far this Sandlewood is above and beyond my all time favorite! My wife got the full size tub for me as a gift and I absolutey love this cream!!!
TOBS shaving creams are at the top of my list and I have tried all sorts of soaps and creams but this one cannot be beat, IMHO.
The scent and latherability are second to none and the service from Maggard Razors is fantastic! I will not go anywhere else to purchase my shaving products, the prices are better than other sites and the service is unbeatable.
I highly recommend this shaving cream and Maggard Razors as well!

The TOBS Sandalwood Shave Cream applies beautifully, cushions effectively and smells great. It has quickly taken over my as my favorite shaving soap. I find the fragrance richer, as opposed to stronger, than previously used products and compliments the TOBS Sandalwood After-Shave Gel nicely.

Lathers quickly and smells great. Face feels great for hours afterward.

Want much of a cream fan but this one caught my eye. My wife got this for me for Christmas and I really enjoy it. Very nice smell, lathers supper easy and gives great protection.

This one has grown on me. Generally speaking I prefer “real” sandalwood essential oil scents like Art of Shaving and Proraso Red but the performance of this one is much better than either of those.

This cream has a really unique scent and I view it more as a “cologne” type of scent. There are some floral notes and I detect musk as well. Some may view this as an “old man” scent but I enjoy it. I get nice longevity out of the scent (I can smell it for a couple hours after use), definitely one of the stronger scents I own.

I personally look forward to shaving with this shaving cream every night. I really like the sandalwood smell, and so does my wife and kids. I also like the way this shaving cream brushes on my face and the way it leaves my skin after the shave. I will be placing another order for this shaving cream soon! (Don’t want to run out!)

This was my first experience with TOBS, and was not disappointed. The scent was a little on the strong side, but very enjoyable, and my girlfriend agrees. She couldn’t stop sniffing me after the shave. It lathered up great, and gave the razor an amazing glide across my face. Will definitely buy again when I run out, and have just ordered TOBS lavender scent to give a shot as well.

Great stuff. Makes a nice thick lather almost instantly. Nice glide, wonderful, highly scented sandalwood cream. Feels very dense on the face. Will last a bit longer than the sandalwood proraso in my opinion, because you don’t need quite as much. I would buy this for a friend as a wonderful gift.

My favorite cream – by far. There are plenty of Sandalwoods out there – but this is the one that does it for me. It’s very pronounced, without being overpowering. The lather is second to none.

  20. 3 out of 5

I personally don’t like the scent all that much, it’s a bit sweet and smells like older people. But, it still works as intended.

  21. 4 out of 5

Strong sandalwood scent, performs well. It doesn’t really do much for me, but others love it so I think I’m in the minority.

Pretty much what he said above. It’s no wonder why everybody raves about TOBS, especially the Sandalwood scent. It was almost spicy while smelling from the sample jar. I went nuts over it before I even lathered it up, and than my disbelief was finalized when I whipped it up. Lathered up quick, and so, so thick. I use a preshave oil either way, but it just added to the comfort. I’ll definitely be ordering this Sone after I make my round through samples, unless anything knocks my socks off until than.

This shaving cream is my favoit of all time. It lathers up fast and i dont need to use any preshave oil with this cream. The scent is just perfect. 5 of 5 recomend it higly.
