I have been using the Vie Long 13070 (Olive Wood Handle) Horse hair brush for about 6 months now and it is exceptional. Horse hair seems to have the ideal properties for a shaving brush: stiff enough without being too stiff, soft enough without being too soft, scratchy enough without being too scratchy. The handle on the 13070 is not large, but rather moderately (and perfectly) sized. After the initial “break-in period” (two weeks, or so) the brush performs majestically time after time, shave after shave. Far and away my favorite brush and my “daily driver”. I do comb it out with a small plastic comb every week or two, but that’s it for maintenance.

A word of caution: the first 3 or 4 times you get this brush wet, it WILL smell like a wet horse in a stable! Intensely and annoying horse odor will subside with use. Be persistent and don’t fear: after just a few shave sessions, the “horsey-smell” disappears completely. Once your horse hair brush “breaks-in”, you’ll have a dependable and enjoyable shaving brush for years.

Lastly, I do own several synthetic brushes that all perform admirably and do a great job. I like synthetics because they are cruelty-free and creatures aren’t required to die in their production. Horse hair is also a cruelty-free option: horse hair is removed from the mane or tail without harming the horse at all. Good Karma for all involved!

This Vie Long wooden handled horsehair brush’s performance is beyond words. Now my top choice in my rotation. I liked it so much I got one for my nephew.

This has become my usual daily shaving brush because it is the best all around brush that I own. It has a quick soak time and good backbone, but is still soft and dense, putting it halfway between boar and badger. I first wanted the loft to be longer, but now think it’s perfect as is. It’s beautiful with it’s olive handle and it hasn’t shed much or any that I’ve noticed. It tackles hard soaps, creams, sticks, just about anything and does a great job.I especially like that if I am lathering and have overworked my lather, or if my lather is too dense or dry, I can take my brush, lather intact, and stick the tip into my cup of water and it will absorb water without disturbing the lather. I then draw the brush out and the excess water drains leaving the lather intact. I read a lot of complaints about horse brushes online, but I can’t find anything wrong with them and I think they’re great. Just remember, it’s not a boar, nor is it a badger, it’s something different. This is what just about everyone shaved with prior to WWI. A premium brush for a very good price and well made in Old Spain.
