I purchased a sample of this shaving soap based on the glowing reviews. This is the first Wholly Kaw product that I have tried so I am not sure if this product is indicative of their other shaving soaps. Some artisan soap makers are known to have soaps with strong scents. Maybe Wholly Kaw fits in that category too.

King Of Oud definitely has a strong scent to it. The scent reminds you of your grandmothers house. It has a complex powdery smell to it. It does create a thick and slick lather which works very well once you figure out the correct water to product ratio.

Personally, I found the scent to be overpowering while lathering and I debated aborting the shave altogether. The scent stayed with me all day long. I could see where this could clash with another cologne of a different scent if you chose to use one. It took a few days to get rid of the scent from my Semogue 830 boar brush (but it did eventually go away).

So if you are into subtle scents, stay away from this shaving soap. However, if you like shaving soaps that have a strong scent that lasts all day long, then this soap is for you.

I purchased this soap on the back of watching Anthony Esposito’s review & I agree with him wholeheartedly. It lathers a dream, providing incredible slickness and cushion. Basically, all I could ever ask from a soap. Post-shave, my face feels tighter & more nourished than any soap i’ve ever used before. The scent is absolutely wonderful, a dark floral ( to me ) that makes me grateful that I used an unfragranced balm & no EDT as I could still smell it on me 4-5 hours afterwards. Straight in at number 1 then. A class act, thank you WK. Thank you Maggards also, for giving me the opportunity of getting it to the UK economically.

Rarely are you able to stumble upon a shave cream that is as exceptional as this one. It has everything that I want in a cream…latherability, slickness and glide, and exceptional scent. It is a diamond in the shave cream world rough.
But, it comes at a heafty price. At $6/oz it is in the very high end price wise and most people will balk at that.
However, if you want to treat yourself to a SPECIAL SHAVE, this is the cream that I will pull off of my shelf each time.
It is very good and I highly recommend it.

Having tried the previous versions, I didn’t feel the need to try the new formula but the Oud scent really intrigued me as I wasn’t familiar with it at all. Having read the other reviews, I was beginning to feel I was missing out on something though. What more do you really need out of a shaving soap after all?
First off the scent, Wholly Kaw never disappoint in this area, especially when it calls for something more complex. I’d personally always longed for a type of dusky rose, but something much more going on than just that, difficult to describe.- but this is it – exactly! All I know is if this is Oud, I want more! This is one beautiful scent, it smells even better once it’s opened up into a lather.
As for performance, well I’ve tried a lot of brands, over one hundred in fact, including all the top contenders in most people’s book. Some will say this brand has the best slickness, that brand cushions so well, the other brand’s post shave is the best. None of them are the best at them all though – but this is! Put it like this, if those big names are the Middle Ages, Wholly Kaw has just landed on the Moon! It really is that much of a leap forward! It’s caused me to rethink my complete rotation. Twenty four hours after my shave and I still feel like I’m wearing some type of mask, my skin feels so different to anything I’ve ever felt before, I can actually see the difference. The slickness and cushion also meant I was able to finish up in two passes and all the cleaner for it. They should just have called this “King Of Soaps” and Wholly Kaw should be very proud of this, and for taking soap to a level we didn’t even know we needed. ..
