Product Description

Released November 7, 2015, our new version 2 open comb head combines the best combination of efficiency and comfort that we have found.

The feedback from our v1 OC head was clear – it was too mild / not efficient enough.  We have resolved these issues with this release.  We are confident the version 2 Maggard Open comb head is a great option for beginners trying out a DE razor for the first time – but will also be loved by experienced wet shavers as well.

Materials:  Zinc Alloy, Chrome plated.

Warranty:  6 months from date of purchase

Made in India.

    :

What does v2 tell me about Maggards? They listen and they are determined to satisfy their customers. They really did get it right with this open comb design. My first impression was the finish was outstanding. The chrome job was nice and I was hard pressed to find any flaws. I put in a Personna blue lab and the shave was wonderful. More aggressive than v1 and I had to only do 2 passes with virtually no touch up. Bravo Maggards!

    :

Crazy, crazy, crazy (did I mention crazy?) good OC head. The angle is perfectly intuitive and the shave is extremely efficient. BBS first use out of gate! F&F solid. Highly recommend.

    :

Recently I have been chasing “The Ultimate Shave”, and have spent big money on top name (ie. Expensive) razors. I have been working on my technique because with these expensive razors I have not been getting very good shaves, so I am assuming that it is my technique.
Now my Maggard Open Comb v1 has always been my travel razor because I could always count on decent shaves. Maybe not the closest, but easy and comfortable. I just tried v2 today and right out of the box got an excellent BBS shave with no irritation. I didn’t have to work on my technique, it just gave me a great shave. So why would anyone want to spend big bucks on some slant/Gereman/adjustable/stainless steel/etc. ? Beats me.
Just get this head and a really nice Maggard handle (my favorite – the MR5), save your money, and get wonderful shaves.

    :

I was one of the first to try the original Maggard Open Comb head. As with other folks, it was way too mild for me. Today, I used the new V2 head. WOW, what a difference! The blade alignment was perfect, no jostling needed. I got a smooth, close, effortless shave. It was as good as with any of my vintage Gillettes. Well done Casie and Brad!!

    ………and thanks for listening!

    :

I have or have owned quite a few different razors. The MR8 CC V2 was my first and it did well. It was tricky to line up and while efficient, wasn’t that comfortable. The new MR1 OC V2 is pretty substantial upgrade. The angle was intuitive and the shave was efficient. The blade lines up easily if you hold it while you tighten the handle. The way it torques the blade in gives you a more rigid blade that provides a close but gentle shave. For only $15.95 it’s hard to pass up even if you own higher end hardware.

    :

A super open comb head! Not too mild, not too aggressive! I paired it with a Derby blade and it was a perfect match! Very comfortable and very efficient! A two pass shave was enough to do the job. I was so impressed with how the shave was going, so I went for the third! Not even a weeper! Which is extremely rare for me regardless of the razor/blade combination.

    :

For the price this head is extremely good. I was initially just going to buy the MR8 Handle to use it with my Mühle R41. But I took a chance and bought the head as well and it gives super efficient and close shaves and it will be a top contender in my rotation.

    :

Best open comb I have used to date.

  10. 5 out of 5

    :

Very comfortable (feels good on the face with no harshness at all, and is not inclined to nick) and very efficient (removes stubble easily and effectively). This head on a hefty stainless handle is a really super razor.

    :

Maggard Razors Open Comb Safety Razor Head (v2) and a personna blue = perfection. Close shave with an added “protection” as the open comb is not overtly aggressive. For the money this is a great value. For any money it is also a great shave.

    :

I bought this as part of the three different head sale. All Heads provide an amazing shave. The Version 2 of the Open Comb Razor head is head and shoulder’s over version 1. Version one had sharp edges on the open comb versus this version has round combs, better design and gives a very smooth and close shave. If you are looking for a modern OC razor, this is it. Look no further.

    :

I love this OC razor. It has quickly become a personal favorite, and worthy of owning two (so if I ever break one, I am not without a backup). Something about the combination of this head with the MR5 just works wonders.

    :

This is my first OC razor and I have to admit that I’m more than pleasantly surprised. The OC razor mowed down a weekend’s worth of growth without cuts or bleeders. There’s very little razor burn as evidenced by the application of Dominica AS. I “cheated” a little by using WWF soap and a previouly used Feather blade, but this is the first time I’ve used an OC razor. More efficient and LESS irritating than my Feather ASD2 and EJ89 when cutting down two days of growth. Thanks Maggard!

    :

Have used this razor for a few shaves now and have gotten some very good shaves. It is more aggressive than my go to razor and so it takes some getting use to but overall I am liking it. The 4 star rating is not related to the shave I am getting but the overall quality of the head I received. The plating is nice and well done but it appears as though mine may have been missed on part of the deburing process as the combs are rather rough and have a fair amount of metal that was not properly cleaned out.

Overall good razor head for the price but lacking in the finishing touches that make it a 5 star product.

    :

I have stands for two razors in my bathroom & this head is in one of them at least 80% of the time (usually on the MR5 with a Lord Platinum or Personna lab blue in it). Fantastic for weekly beard maintenance (if that’s your thing) or a full removal.

May as well buy all three heads at once…

    :

I’ve shaved a few times now with this head and really like it. My most used head is the R41 but I wanted something that was more mild to use at times. This head is perfect. This head is very efficient whether your shaving a days worth of growth or two to three days worth this head does the job. I think anyone interested on an open comb should have this one. Maggards service was great as always.

    :

Wow! Just wow! I bought the V2 OC and paired it with the MR3 handle. Today I got a shave with this razor that compares to my normal straight razor shaves. I lathered with Cella applied with a Semogue 620. I put in a brand new Gillette 7 O’Clock Super Stainless and did a 3 pass shave. BBS with zero irritation. Not only that, but it was so smooth that there were times when I wasn’t even certain the blade was on my skin. This is a very well designed head.

I am a nooB to DE shaving with sensitive skin, recipe for disaster! Yesterday, I tried my V02 OC head with the MR5 handle. This is love!
Very mild razor with excellent weight and a instructional handle that showed me the best two gripping points.Got a very pleasant shave with no irritation. This setup is very much a keeper!

    :

I just received this head today along with the v3 and v3a. I used this one first because I had never used an open comb before. That being said, I really wasn’t sure what to expect. Well what I got was an amazing shave!!! I had such a smooth shave after one WTG pass and some touch ups that I stopped there. No irritation at all and one of the best shaves I ever got from a DE shave. The results I got with this head loaded with a Gillette Silver Blue blade was damn near perfection. The only negative thing I can say is that the finish on mine was not spectacular. It had some scratches and spots that looked like bubbles but I think that is just the metal underneath the chrome that isn’t totally flat. But at the price paid I wasn’t expecting a Muhle/EJ quality chrome finish on this thing. Functionally it is superb even if it isn’t cosmetically perfect. This is definitely a great purchase, my first at Maggard, and I’ll definitely be a returning customer.

    :

I bought a v2oc in feb 16. from that time on it has been my daily razor. it is the best razor at a reasonable price. I do not usually rate products, but in this case i will. I have used a Parker tto, EJ 89, Merkur 41 and the safety bar version of the same and the v2oc is the best next to my muhle r41. It easily handles a 2 or even a 3 day beard, with any blade i have tried. Also, the blade alignment is perfect, not close, but perfect. there is absolutely no blade wobble on the top cap posts! I probably will boy one for a spare. My search is now over for THE razor. As always, Maggard razors service is on top. great product!

    :

I’m new to DE shaving and after checking out some forums I decided to buy an open comb to have something more aggressive for shaving my head and easier to rinse out because I tend to go a while between head shaves. This worked wonderfully even with about a weeks worth of regrowth…i did have to work at it but usually I have to use clippers first so this was faster and more enjoyable too.

    :

I’ve been using this head every day for a little over 4 months now (had only 9 or 10 months prior DE experience). I’m not sure if I’d recommend it as a first razor (got some razor burn at first). It’s definitely a bit more aggressive than the Edwin Jagger I started with, but less so than the Ikon 102 slant I tried after that.

But after using it for a while, I have to say that for where I am now — it’s perfect. I’m getting quick, excellent, usually irritation-free shaves every day.

    :

I got the v2 open comb head with the mrt handle and pouch to use as a travel kit but I really love the short handle combined with the smoothness and efficiency of this razor head. I own a 37c slant as my daily driver as well as a standard razors de and the maggard v2 open comb will quickly become my most used razor.

I also was offered a slight discount on the handle and pouch since I bought them together and, as always with maggard, shipping was quick and cheap.

I highly reccomendation this razor head and don’t forget one of the awesome maggard handles with it.

    :

I shaved with the V2 on the MR20 handle today for the first time and I am very pleased. The head holds the blade perfectly so there is no alignment concern. The chrome plating is very good. Like my Merkur open combs I can lower or raise the angle to slightly adjust aggressiveness. My first shave with 2 days of growth was extremely close and comfortable, one of the best shaves I’ve ever had! I cannot wait to use it again tomorrow! It deserves all the 5 star reviews.

    :

I have used the V2 for 5 times now and I love it! It is the most aggressive open comb I have used, more aggressive than the Merkurs. However, unlike aggressive closed bar razors it gives me comfortable shaves. I have bought 11 DE razors in the last 2 years, trying to get the best combination of closeness and comfort. That included adjustable, twist-to-open, closed bar 2 & 3 piece razors, slants, and three other open combs. The V2,, razor no. 12, so far gives that to me with the Astra Superior Platinum blade. It cuts very efficiently which means I have to use less strokes to get the shave I want. For me, with a heavy fast growing beard that has to be shaved against the grain, this is the razor I need to get BBS shaves without the bloodshed. At this time it is probably the best razor I’ve owned since I started shaving in 1960. For those who don’t like the feel of the open comb the teeth on this razor are flat and smooth, as comfortable as any closed bar head. For my face and beard Maggard nailed it with this design.

    :

This is a fantastic razor head for the price. The tolerances are very good compared to other Maggard heads I’ve tried, meaning you don’t have to do nearly as much blade positioning. It just falls right into place as you tighten the handle. The open comb is perfect when you are shaving longer or thicker hair, being less clogged by hair and lather.

    :

Received the v2 open comb razor head this week. Initial impressions was the razors fit and finish were lacking. maybe a 6 out of 10 stars. The razor base has alot of pitting and uneven surface from the casting manufacturing. Shaved once with fhe razor and to be fair it did provide a close smooth shave. I personally would not buy again. Maggard is still a great company in my book!

    :

Magic! I have a collection of great razors, some mild, some aggressive…Mongoose, Weber, Rockwell, Merkur, Edwin Jagger, and all of Maggard’s heads..closed comb, slant, and this open comb. For me, this head provides a BBS shave with almost zero sensation of having a blade to my face…..no feedback, no dragging, no burn. I can usually get 6-8 shaves from Feathers, Personnas, etc., but just swapped out a Gillette Silver Blue after 14 shaves. Unreal. Absolutely the smoothest shave I’ve ever had after 15+ years of wet-shaving. I’d love this head in black or nitride-coated. I’d pay
whatever the asking price is, for sure! Well done Maggard’s.

    :

I have mixed feeling about this razor head. The shave I get is definitely enjoyable as I find the open comb design produces less drag on my skin. It is also not overly aggressive but still provides a close shave.

Unfortunately the head I received had several small pits and blemishes to the finish. After corresponding with Maggard’s it sounds like these heads made in India are prone to this condition.

I’m a perfectionist when it comes to my shaving supplies so the sub-par finish does detract from the overall experience. Still, for a low cost option and Maggard’s excellent service you really can’t go wrong.

    :

The is a medium aggressive razor. Very forgiving and great for beginners and experienced shavers. Flawless finish and quality. Perfect for someone seeking a more aggressive shave than a closed comb razor. I owned two other maggard safety razors extremely please with all my orders. My go to place for all ny shaving needs.

    :

I purchased this head in the 3 head bundle. It was my first OC head and wasn’t sure what to expect. I let 3 days of growth go just to see how the claims of an OC head works. I was surprised how efficient the head worked. It was smoother than most closed comb heads I had used in the past. I have about 8 razors that I rotate between. This one is my quick shaver head, 1 to 2 passes. 1 pass to get rid of visual growth and 2 passes to get a great shave. With 2 passes and clean up I typically will get a BBS shave. This head is an outstanding value and the best way to try out an OC if you never have. Maggard also has the best customer service I’ve experienced in any industry. Thanks Jerick and Brad! You’ve won a long time customer!

    :

I like it. It’s my first open comb. More aggressive than the stock Edwin Jagger head, but in a good way. Closer shave, no nicks. I am quite happy with it. I may wait a while before trying the closed I bought at the same time.

    :

First,I am new to DE and was using a Dorco closed comb TTO(twist to open) razor and was getting poor results regardless of the blade I was using. I have a tough beard and had read that an OC might work better for me.
I am so glad I took a chance with this one; I scored a winner.

I paired mine with an MR5. It is very easy to use and responsive. I have used it with a Lord Platinum Class blades and was quite happy with my initial shaves using that combo.
The alignment has been perfect with every blade insertion. The fit and finish are great. I am extremely happy with my purchase.
Thanks Maggard; I have found “my razor” and now I can spend my time working on technique and finding the best blade.

    :

I’ve been trying this with both a Windrose handle and the Maggard travel handle. It gives a close shave with both and the chrome finish is excellent quality for the price. This is my first open comb razor; I can’t see me ever wanting to replace it.

  36. 5 out of 5

    :

I purchased this razor head to replace my broken Merkur 23c head. This head attached beautifully to the 23c’s pole, which I saved. This head exposes the blade much more than the 23c or 34c, the two razors I am used to. It’s more aggressive than those two models, but not overly so. Blade angle seems more important when using this razor head to me. Therefore, I would not recommend it for a beginner. Paired the razor head with a Personna Lab Blue blade and it cut through two days of scruff like a hot knife through butter. You can clearly hear the blade cutting through the hairs with this head! No irritation at all. A more intuitive shave than my 37c slant-head for weekend scruff. Will probably pair this head with a milder blade, such as a Derby, in the future. So glad I purchased this head instead of buying a new 23c or another closed comb razor.
