Product Description

Released in December 2015, our new V3A Aggressive closed comb head is for those looking for a bit more “bite” in their shave.

On April 29th, 2016, we’ve switched over the finish of the V3A to our new matte gray metal.  This finish is a metal plating like very few on the market.  It is durable and beautiful all at the same time.

With a wider blade gap, more exposure, and less blade curvature, this razor is great for those looking for more control over their shaving angle.  Be careful though, the V3A can bite!  For those interested, there is a few things that should be said:

  • There is a little bit of blade play on these heads; but less than our original V1 heads or a Fatip, for example.
  • Alignment is best if blade is lined up with top cap and held in place on ends of cap while tightening down onto base plate.

The gun metal style chrome plating is nearly flawless, and looks great on many handles on the market, including our signature satin-finished stainless handles.

Standard M5 x 0.8 threading

Materials:  Zinc Alloy, Chrome plated.

Warranty:  6 months from date of purchase

Got one of these the other day from Brad. Put it on a MR1 handle and the shave was AWESOME! Agressive, yes, but not too bad. Super smooth face when I was done. It now has a home at her place for emergency shaves. Thanks Brad!

When USPS showed this arrived at my post office this morning I waited to shave until I could pick it up. I ordered two of these heads as I knew my son would want one to. The finish is beautiful on this head and it gives a terrific shave. Not as aggressive as the R41 or tech heads we like but close to it. An effortless two pass shave and you have a BBS shave. Blade alignment is no problem with this head. Will definitely be getting used a lot. Shipping and service from Maggards was great. Actually recurved this head before expecting to.

Good value, priced right. Alignment is okay. Finish is fine, particularly at this price point. Somewhat aggressive; provides a good, close shave.

Threw this baby on an ATT Atlas handle and went to town, I was a bit worried because it looked like it was going to be too aggressive but I got a clean two-pass shave (WTG/ATG) that was closer to BBS than I usually get with the stupid sideways neck grain I have to work with. Overall I’m extremely satisfied, and the $8 price point is just the icing on the cake.

Received this just the other day. Really a great razor. Love the aggressiveness of the head, Can’t go wrong with Maggard anything!

  6. 5 out of 5

Looks aggressive but it is not as aggressive as an R41 where you really feel the blade. Nice smooth and close shave. Picked up a MR20 Handle at the same time. Beautiful match for this razor head and looks like it was made for each in common. If you are looking for a nice razor to add to your shave den, look no further. This is a nice razor. Only suggestion is make sure you align the blade within the head.

I feel bad only giving it 4 stars but for me it’s just a little too aggressive. Beautiful fit and finish and does shave close, but at least for me it was borderline scratchy. Tried with Astas, Personna’s, and & O’Clock Yellows. Same result… close shave but with some irritation and burn that I don’t get with the standard V-3. Wish the V2’s &V3s came in this finish.

  8. 4 out of 5

The V3A is a bit more aggressive than other Maggard heads. For 8 bucks you really can’t pass it up. I should explain the 4 star rating. The head does have blade play as specified, blade play is an annoyance for me.

I ordered this as a bundle with the V3 (see my other review for the V3) because I wanted a more aggressive razor for my head.

My setup has ben the MR5 with the V2 and either Portland General Store soap (love that stuff – great lather from a soild soap), art of shaving cream (I like it, but pricey), or proraso (not a fan), with an art of shaving silver tip and Astra blades. This setup has been great for shaving my neck and head.

I used the V3 this morning to shave my neck and head. I started with my cheeks (I have a beard) and it tugged a little which was disappointing. I then shaved my neck and it was perfect. No nicks, no tugging. Then I went to my head. The first pass with the grain was pedestrian and nothing to write home about. Then I did an against the grain pass and this is where the V3A head really shines! This thing was a revelation against the grain on my head. It was a genuine 2 pass shave to get baby butt smooth. Very little tidying and absolutely no razor burn, irritation or nicks.

If you shave your head and want something that doesn’t require you to make several passes and/or pull and tug at your skin to get those little spots, give this head a try. Strangely the head feels very light on the razor, but it seems to cut everything in it’s path. It doesn’t require much effort, and doesn’t seem to leave anything behind. I did a with the grain (3 days growth) and against the grain pass and it was amazing! It got all of the usual spots I have to go back over with very little effort.

Very impressed with this head, and will likely continue using it as my go to, to shave my head. Thank you Cassie and Brad for coming out with a more aggressive head. I love it.

Most everyone has mentioned the aggressiveness of this head, and I will agree it is definitely on aggressive side compared with my other razors (EJ89, Merkur HD, Parker OC, Merkur 39C slant). After my first shave I thought maybe it was too aggressive, and I put it up for a week. But upon reflection I thought, that was actually a pretty descent shave. I used it again this morning and shaved two passes with the grain only . The second pass felt like there was nothing left to even clean up. I’d say the shave closeness was as close as a normal 3 pass, WTG, XTG, XTG with my other razors. Ironically I think you can shave with less irritation with this razor, because you can get as close with fewer passes. Just don’t add any extra pressure.

The only reason I am taking a star off the rating is the blade alignment. I really had to fiddle with it to get the blade truly square on both sides. The plating is perfect and looks unique compared to the rest of my collection. If the alignment was better this would be a true 5 star razor. If you don’t mind spending some time to ensure the blade is aligned proper, this razor can provide a superb shave.

I bought this a few weeks ago to pair with the MR5 handle and I couldn’t be any happier. On a lot of the shaving forums I hear all these guys talking about their expensive razors. After shaving with this a few times I just can’t understand why you would spend $200 on up. This razor gives an excellent shave in three passes. It is an aggressive razor but in my mind not overly aggressive. On top of that it is has an awesome finish that really looks great among my other razors. It is definitely one of if not my favorite razor.

I just got this head with a mr9 handle last week for my birthday. First of all, love the color of the head vs. the stainless handle, very striking. The fit and finish is good. There is a little blade play depending on which brand blade you choose. That said, my EJ de89 has the same amount of play and cost around $50. I am fairly new to wet shaving and wanted to try a more aggressive razor and this fit the bill. I really like it and have been using it every day .

  13. 5 out of 5

I’ve been using this head in my rotation for the last few weeks and I’m very happy with it. Aggressive wise I’d consider it similar to my Merkur slant (37C), as in they are both smooth and efficient, not uncomfortable or ridiculously aggressive. Where this razor really shines for me is if I’ve skipped a few days of shaving, the V3A will take off 2-3 days of pretty heavy growth without a problem. The finish is excellent, and alignment only takes a few seconds to make sure I’ve got the blade even.

  14. 5 out of 5

The V3A razor head is aggressive, but for me it is just right. It has been my go to razor the last few weeks. When I ordered this razor head, I had also ordered the MR1 and MR3 handles. While I do get good, smooth and irritation free shaves with the MR1 handle, I get GREAT, smooth and irritation free shaves when I pair the head with the MR3 handle. For me the V3A head and MR3 handle are excellent together. In addition, Maggard Razors continues to impress me with their excellent customer service. When I received my order, there was a defect with one of the items. I had sent an email to Maggard Razors explaining the problem and they remedied the situation very quickly. Thank you Casie, Brad and the rest of the Maggard Razors team.

Started with their v2-mild,blade offset to one side, but good shaver.Got the v3 and v3a.V3 is just above the v2 and very easy to shave with, still mild but good.V3a-more aggressive, but not real aggressive, easy to shave with, now use the v3a a lot,I recommend this to anyone,a keeper.

I was looking for an affordable gunmetal plated razor head to buy for the hand turned razor handles I make as part of my hobby when I came across these.
I’m very impressed with the quality of the finish & build at this price.

I was abit Leary of them being labeled as aggressive & blade alignment issues so I just purchased a few with the intention of keeping one for myself to test before putting the others on the handles I made for sale.

I can say these are in my opinion more aggressive than my HD or DE89 but it’s not nasty and paired with a fresh Gillette Silver blue it mowed down 2 days of growth Smoothly with ease and not so much as a nick after a 3 pass shave wtg , xtg & atg. It was a very pleasant bbs shave and no irritation.

I’m not sure I’d reccomend it as a first razor but if you have your technique down you can’t go wrong at this price!
As far as blade alignment I thought it was about the same as my DE89 or some of my old Gillette techs.

A quality product, amazing price, Fantastic customer service & fast shipping!!
I will be buying more in the future and would not hesitate to reccomend this head to an experienced Safety Razor user.

Not only this is a bargain, it looks like a professionally coated head with unique (to me) properties. You need to try it, really. Everyone should own this head, especially considering cost.

  18. 5 out of 5

I purchased this razor head some time ago and am just getting around to posting about it. I am pretty new to DE shaving and I might have purchased this before my technique was were it needed to be. The first time I shaved with it I did not high a wonderful experience; however, after a time I tried again and the outcome was completely different. It was great! I have shaved with this razor several times and continue to receive a great shave with two passes and a few pick-ups. Would not trade this razor in for anything.

  19. 5 out of 5

I wouldn’t call this aggressive, I’d call it efficient.

I bought the V3A razor head and the standard V3 razor head, and the V3A is just as comfortable for me as the standard V3 head but provides a much closer shave with less effort. It feels very smooth on your face and it would take real effort to cause irritation with this head. This is probably the best razor head that the Maggard’s have ever offered and the price point is amazing.

  20. 5 out of 5

FANTASTIC!! love this razor, can’t be beat for the price (or even twice that). It’s efficient AND smooth (don’t want to say aggressive as it feels gentle compared to my R41)… blade alignment & plating quality are both very good, no issues with mine…have over 50 razors and ordering a second V3A just in case they become scarce

  21. 5 out of 5

    Fantastic Value!

This is pretty smooth for how efficient the head design is. Two passes is plenty but I can do a third if needed. I’d recommend some blade exploration as it can be picky with blades. Blade alignment is solid and I love the black chrome look.

  22. 5 out of 5

I’m only 1 shave in with this head but I can see I’ll have to get another just in case. I paired it with a big black anodized handle I got on eBay and a Croma blade with 2 shaves on it. Alignment on this is definitely better than the standard V3 head. The finish on mine is perfect, and the threads are silky smooth. I broke out the Tabac and approached this head with caution. The extra blade exposure really forces you to slow down and find that perfect angle. It puts you in the zone, which for me, has become my Zen place since picking up wet shaving. 3 passes (wtg, atg, xtg) later, and I’m left with the smoothest, cleanest shave of my life. Truly a magical piece of hardware.

Maggard Razors V3A (Aggressive) Closed Comb Safety Razor Head i like the color it looks professionally coated provides a good, close shave I recommend it.

A great razor. Looks great. The workmanship is at a high level. Moderately aggressive shave, you can feel the blade on his face and control his every move. You can easily achieve a clean and high quality results.

  25. 2 out of 5

I really like the razor heads performance, and the color.

However, after changing my blade for the first time this week I noticed several scratches in the finish so I doubt my head will last that long. I wish I’d given it a thorough inspection on arrival but I was too excited to use it I guess. It’s scratched in places I couldn’t possibly scratch it such as near the base of the top cap posts. A shame so far I like the performance the best from the heads I’ve tried. I ordered it from Canada so it was kinda pricey. I might have just gotten a dud but make sure it inspect yours when they come in, lesson learned I guess.

  26. 5 out of 5

Not as ‘aggressive’ as I thought it would be which is good. I would say that it is super efficient. Gives a very close shave. Best I ever had. Reminds me a bit of the older V1 head but a touch more aggressive. In a league above EJ and Merkur for sure. I bought 2 just to have a spare. Amazing head. If you used mild heads and looking for something more efficient, do yourself a favor and pull the trigger on this right now.

  27. 5 out of 5

Received the head today and took it for a spin. What an amazing plating finish, its like metal black shiny but yet sandy finish too, really attractive and no imperfections anywhere on the molding. As far as the shave goes WOW, I have SS machined razors and other top notch ones and this one is as good for laughable cheap price point.

I personally don’t like Zamac but this puppy I highly recommend and if it breaks well I think I’ll be ordering some spare one 🙂 Awesome product Maggard!

I picked up this head when they first where released and have been shaving with it since. You can not beat the close smooth shave with this head. I use Feather blades with it and it is outstanding.
I am one of those people who normally have to shave in the morning then again around three or come dinner time it looks like I have not shaved all day. With this blade I do not get even a 5 oclock shadow until around 8PM. Love it.
Shaves closer then a Merker 34C and shaves better then a couple of my open tooth razors.

  29. 5 out of 5

Best DE razor head I have used. With better blade feel, I find I am less likely to cut myself. After a week of use with a couple of different blades, I’m a happy customer. Nice close shave. Thanks, Maggard!

  30. 5 out of 5

5 Stars for performance AND value. This head is nothing short of amazing! Well tooled and near flawless. I own a lot of razors and handles and this head on ANY of my handles gives me the most clean, refreshing shave every time. Today, I paired it with an Astra SP and I literally could not tell there was even a blade in the razor. Meanwhile, it was melting away two days of stubble, with, across, and against the grain with NO irritation whatsoever. I can’t recommend it enough. I have no idea how long it will last but if I get even six months out of this thing, I’ll toss, buy another and be right back in paradise. KILLER value.

Absolutely fantastic! It has the right level of aggressiveness and efficiency. Very beautiful looking as well! Great job guys!

Even I was shocked how, after months of having ordered this head and then getting caught up with my recent exploration into SE razors, this turns out to be an absolute stunner of a shave, an instant rotation regular. Close, incredibly comfortable and perhaps the biggest bargain on the market. With a decently heavy handle and a light touch, it delivers (for me) one of those BBS efforts that rivals the iKon ShaveCraft Tech (another personal favorite, but extremely aggressive) and the 2011 Muhle R41. Note that I am using a Voskhod blade, and haven’t tried others (yet) with this particularly model.

Oh, and the price…unbelievable. Nice finish too.

  33. 5 out of 5

Great quality and finish. Aggressiveness of this a perfect balance for achieving a great shave. I have a very coarse beard and very pleased with this. Customer service was very helpful in the product details in placing my order.

  34. 5 out of 5

PLEASE DON’T LET THE AGGRESSIVE DESCRIPTION PUT YOU OFF! This is a wonderful shaver, smooth, close with no serious blade feel. In fact, it feels MILDER than the standard maggard heads when shaving with it and thats down to both the design but mostly from the platting/coating. Just add a good soap & brush from the store and your set!

  35. 5 out of 5

Great razor head. Finish keeps it looking nice and clean. I have been able to eliminate a third pass to get a really close shave. I have rotated 4 blade brands through it even my least favorite cheap blades feel pretty good in this razor. Favorite pairing is a Kai blade and my hand turned wood handle.

  36. 5 out of 5

more efficient than fatip piccolo, much less aggresive than R41
    i’m impressed

  37. 5 out of 5

This head is the best razor I have used including a vintage Gillette RedTip and a Muhle R41. I gives me the closest shave I have ever had. I was disappointed in the Maggard Slant and decided to give the V3A a try. Wow– what a shave. Don’t hesitate to order one.

  38. 5 out of 5

    This is my favourite head!
I’ve tried quite a few in the past years and this one this the best job!
The big gap makes it quite efficient but it didn’t take away its smoothness and the blade position is perfect.
Don’t let the price tag put you away, it is crazy good.

  39. 5 out of 5

I recently purchased the V3A and the MR3 handle and I have achieved the closest shave of my life. I have a heavy fast growing beard and I didn’t start fealing stuble until the late afternoon. The razor was super agressive and it got the job done in 2 passes (WTG. and ATG) while my other safety razor gets the job done in 4 to 5. I had this combo matched up with a Feather blade. I am now completely hooked on shaving with a safety razor.

  40. 5 out of 5

Really like it! Agressive but smooth shaves! I use a mild blade (Shark Stainless) and short but heavy handle. Works great and you really control all the angles with so much blade sticking out. Awesome!

  41. 3 out of 5

The V3A is just a bloody mess….the Maggard Slant Head is a far better performer.

  42. 5 out of 5

I’ve tried them all, even the new slant head, which I didn’t like, and found that this aggressive head is my sweet spot. It shaves as well as my Merkur slant without it biting me if I’m not careful. Have a heavy course beard. I haven’t found a blade it didn’t work with yet. My favorite handle has the finger grooves & knurling, gives great control even over the long ones that I like in my big paws.

  43. 5 out of 5

I have used several different heads from open comb, slant and adjustable, but this is my favorite. I pair this head with silver blues for an incredible shave. Surprising how such an aggressive head can shave so smoothly.

  44. 5 out of 5

I’ve had this head for 5 months, and have come to really love it. Surprisingly, I would say that it is more forgiving than the Maggard V3 Closed Comb head–probably due to it being more efficient. I get consistent, weeper-free, BBS shaves with a variety of blades (with the exception of Feather), and can blade buff without irritation. The fit, finish, and price are excellent. It also has a good deal of audible feedback, which I’m a fan of. I’ve gone through a plethora of razors (R41, PAA Prismatic, Red Tip, Razorock Mission, Razorock Heavy Duty, Ikon X3, German 37. Maggard Slant…), and the V3A and Merkur 34C are my only keepers up until now. Very satisfied with this purchase, and I always love dealing with Maggard Razors!

  45. 5 out of 5

    Good and gentle shaver!

  46. 5 out of 5

I really love this head, I was accustomed to a 3 pass shave + cleanup but this V3a is so efficient that I can get same results with only a 2 pass shave + cleanup. I am very happy. It is not as smooth as other razors but in the end I get an efficient shave with no weepers or irritation so I am happy and this is my new daily driver.

  47. 5 out of 5

I’ve used at least 120 different DE razors over the years. The V3A is one of the smoothest shavers I’ve used. For the price it’s an unbelievable value. Punches well above its weight class. Great finish and well engineered, it is easy enough for beginner or expert shavers.

  48. 4 out of 5

Been using this V3A for a few weeks now with my go-to Gillette Silver Blue DE blades. Debated between giving it 4 or 5 stars, but went with 4 for the simple fact that it is a VERY good shaver, extremely smooth, and rarely do I get nicks….but it is not the closest shave. I generally use a Muhle R41, and I absolutely love that razor, and so everything is judged in comparison to that, and the V3A simply is not aggressive enough. The R41 will cut me more often, and it tugs a bit more, but I’m rewarded with the smoothest face, closest shave ever. For me, it still is king.

I’d suggest the V3A to people looking for a very smooth, low nick rate, better than average aggressiveness shave, and a superb value. But do not expect that the V3A will give you R41 closeness but with a smoother, less bloody experience.

  49. 4 out of 5

The V3A head performs like an aggressive razor, but it doesn’t feel aggressive. There is some blade feel, but not an uncomfortable amount. Don’t let the A steer you away from this head. Proper technique leads to fantastic shaves, free of blood. The only minor gripe I have with this razor head is that it takes a bit of fiddling to get even blade exposure on both sides. However, the price of Maggard heads are VERY reasonable, so it’s hard to complain too much about a moment of alignment.

I haven’t had a bad shave with any Maggard razor head, but the V3A is my favorite of the bunch. That said, I’d love to see premium machined stainless razor heads from Maggard. The tighter tolerances would eliminate any alignment issues and the razor heads would be more likely to last a lifetime. A boy can dream.

Bottom line: great shaver with some minor alignment fiddling

    Paul – October 1, 2018:

The V3A head is aggressive exactly as I want it and along with the MR3 stainless steel handle very well.

For me a very good purchase and I can highly recommend both the head and the handle.
