Unfortunetly, I just bought this razor before I knew Maggard had them. But i did pay about the same for it. Ming Shi is one of the top chinese razor makers just above Weishi. I own their TTO razor and it is fantastic. So I thought I would try the 2000s Future Clone. I’ve had two shaves with it and it shaves great! My friend has the Mekur version and side by side it is hard to tell the difference, except the Ming Shi might be a touch lighter, but a very hefty razor. The fit and finish is fantastic. Blade alignment is perfect no wiggle. All the blogs and reviews are right about this razor.

This is not Chinese junk. Apparentley it seems that they can make good razors. You guys at Maggard did not go wrong stocking the Ming Shi 2000s! Unless you absolutely have to have the Merkur, I dont, get this Razor instead, you will not be dissapointed!!

This is a beautiful razor. I don’t know how Ming Shi got away with this. It’s damn near impossible to tell it from a Futur. The fit and finish are perfect and it gives a great shave. Snap these up before Mercur finds out. This is the best razor bargain out there, bar none. My only complaint is that the instructions are in Chinese. I dug up the Mercur instructions and fixed that. Complaint resolved.

Very nice razor, especially for the money. I used this razor with Voshkod blade on setting #2 the first shave, #2.5 second day, and back to #2 on day three. Works great and gives a very close shave without fear of any nicks. I would suggest buying this razor if you were looking at a Merkur Futur but could not afford the price at this time. I have to warn you, if you buy this razor, you will not need to save up for the Futur since you will have one that works and looks like one already. Very happy with my purchase and the customer service that Brad and Cassie provides. You can’t go wrong buying from Maggard Razors.

Don’t have the Mekur to compare it with but with a 365blade I got a really nice close shave. Very pleased.

Couldn’t ask for a better razor for the price ! Well made, heavy, usable adjustment settings, great price and fast shipping ! Using mine on the 3-4 settings, I like a close shave , using some old “Made in USA” Albertson’s brand razor blades that are surprisingly sharp (Personnas perhaps?) ……..

i already had a merkur futur. i can’t justify 300-400 for a razor like oneblade, etal. the futur is very nice. i got a ming shi clone for 17.95 elsewhere. then maggard had these. i got a couple of these. slightly less heavy, but shaves just as good. no need for anyone to buy the real one. however, there are lots of clones, but this ming shi is phenomemal and maggard has the best price and service.

I have never used an adjustable before but I do have some experience with DE shaving. I know that price is not always an indicator of performance (YMMV). This razor is actually amazing. While I still feel that I can get a better shave with some of my other razors, a lot of this is experience. I am currently on shave #5 using a Wilkinson blade.

I prep with a glycerine soap wash then proraso pre-shave. I then use my Semogue 830 boar and Barrister & Mann Bay Rum Soap. My beard is moderate (not really tough. I usually get a BBS with a 3 pass shave and a bit of polishing

Shave #1 WTG 1 XTG 3 ATG 5 – Lots of nicks and one cut (get out the MY Nick Is Sealed)
    Shave #2 WTC 1.5 XTG 3 ATG 4 – Fewer nicks
    Shave #3 WTG 1.5 XTG 3 ATG 3.5 – Few Nicks
    Shave #4 WTG 1.5 XTG 3 ATG 3.5 – 1 nick
    Shave #5 WTG 1 XTG 3 ATG 3 – No nicks

My shave is between a BBS and a DFS by Shave # 5. i plan to go back to my usual razors for a blade or two and then try again with another 2 blade types. Up to a Kai or Feather and down to a Derby to explore the full potential of the razor.

This is a razor that needs a bit of work to get tuned in to your face. You can actually have a bit of fun doing it, It takes me back to my first days of wet-shaving when I took 20 minutes to do a 3 pass shave to avoid cutting myself to ribbons. It’s nice to be a “newbie” of sorts again, trying to perfect an unfamiliar shaving skill. To be able to do it with a quality razor that costs about a fifth of a Futur makes it all the sweeter.

Chinese razors are bombarding the wet shaving industry like crazy, especially when you search for razors on Amazon. In fact, companies like Vikings Blade are amassing Baili razors that should cost under 10 bucks, and are selling them for almost 40 dollars! Why are people buying them from Vikings? Well, their marketing is good…but more importantly, Baili razors actually shave phenomenally for the price point. Just remember to do the research before buying into the hype. In other words, caveat emptor.

My point is that I didn’t hesitate when Maggards started stocking this razor. I immediately ordered one, along with some other things. I just shaved with it, and I must say…I haven’t had a great shave like this with such a cheap razor since I got the Feather Popular. I used Maggards pre shave oil, TOBS Jermyn St cream, and the Ming shi on setting 3. It sliced through my thick Italian 4 day stubble with no issues. No pulling, burn, nothing. I used setting 2 on the second and third pass, and the results were just as good as my EJ or Merkur. Oh…I used feather, not the included blades.

Kudos, Maggards for selling this fierce adjustable shaving weapon. You rock.

    :

As always Maggard razors shipping was second to none. As far as the razor, I’m very happy with it. The fit and finish is really well done, although I don’t have a Futur to compare with it. But the Finish is just as good if not better then my Merkur 37c. Surprisingly good shaves and blade alignment is good.
As far as what’s the best setting on whatever pass you’re on? I’m only on my fifth shave and am fine tuning each time; each shave gets better with practice.
Thanks Maggard Razors for offering this!

Just to let people know and offer some help, this razor is mild to moderate up to setting three, but gets very aggressive after setting 3-6. So keep that in mind. It is the same way as with the Merkur.

    :

Full disclosure, I’ve had no prior experience with the razor that this one is cloned after. That being said, after using this I would strongly considering purchasing the real one. This is a great little shaver and allowed me to try out a rather unorthodox style of razor I’d had some level of interest and trepidation over for a while. For what you get at this price, you can’t beat the output. Totally worth a purchase.

This is a fantastic razor at an unbelievable price. It works exactly as expected and has given me very close shaves. I’ve had great luck using Feather blades and settings 3-5. This has replaced my Merkur 39C for everyday use. Thanks for the excellent recommendation Brad!

    :

My recommendation is this: if you have to buy only one razor, it has to be the Ming Shi 2000S. Without any doubt, you can do this being assured that you will have made the best decision. Here is why

Let it be a Merkur or a Parker, this razor as good as any other adjustable double edge. It is even as good as the razor that it copied, the Merkur Futur. I systematically tried all of those. I spent close to $1,000 looking for a razor that would give me satisfaction (more about this in a subsequent paragraph).

The key is to know how to use an adjustable razor and to equip it with a blade that suits your particular beard. An adjustable will fill extend the performance of a standard razor (one with a head) to make it feel similar to a straight razor with the standard razor as its base. At a lower setting, the adjustable will perform more like a standard razor and at higher setting, it will perform more like a straight razor. Start at setting 1, always put the razor parallel against your face first, and than start inclining it until you feel the blade. This is the optimum angle for that setting. If this works then do the same for the second setting and so forth until it is no longer comfortable to increase the setting.

I have parts of my face (below the sideburns and under the chin) that i could not shave with most double edge razor but that i could only shave with a straight razor. So i have both: a mild and a straight razor. Along with a blade and shaving soap that will match your particular facial hair, the Ming Shi 2000S set at 5 solved that problem for me.

I have tried 37 different blades. I found that sharp blades like the Feather or the Astra Superior Platinum gave me the best shave while using the Ming Shi 2000S.

    :

Once wet, the smooth and polished handle of the Ming Shi 2000S is slippery, especially if you have soap on your fingers which is always the case if you stretch your skin. To avoid this, I coated mine with a thin layer of silicone, powdered the handle with sand dust on the wet silicone, and put it standing up in its box until the silicone dried. Now, regardless of how much soap i have on my fingers, holding the razor is easy

I haven’t used a safety razor for lose to 50 years. I purchased this hoping that an adjustable razor would make certain I had a razor I could live with. This product is excellent. First shave was clean no nicks, and every one since has been the same for the past two weeks. I found no faults with the Ming Shi blades either. I have nothing but distance memories for comparison, but if you’re uncertain about what to buy, give this a try.

I was reluctant to give this razor a try, but the price was attractive. Boy was I surprised! Excellent quality and a great shave. Not sure I would reorder the blades that came with the 2000s, but they did give a decent shave.

Great call by the Maggard Team! I’ve ordered a second for my travel kit.

Since I started using DE razors for the last three years I’ve been curious about the adjustable. Didn’t want to pay the high price for one in case I didn’t like it. For the price of this one I couldn’t resist. I did two shaves using all the adjustments back and forth seeing how felt. Ended up using 6 on my face and setting 4 on my jaw bone and neck area. Almost had BBS with one pass and little touching up in spots. Seems to be well built razor with a good finish on it for the price. Only downfall I have on it and this is strictly a personal preference is i think it looks and feels kind of bulky. But for the price anyone wanting to try an adjustable I would definitely get this razor. Thank Maggards for having it available and for their great service!

    :

I’m actually shocked at how good this razor is, considering I started out with a negative perception of it. The moment I opened it I expected to hate it. Not because it’s any lower quality than the Merkur Futur that it is a clone of, but because of some of the Futur design decisions that I hadn’t known about (this is my first Futur). The head is much larger than most DEs, most settings on the razor are very aggressive (I have very sensitive skin, and don’t like aggressiveness), no knurling to hold with soapy hands, and if you don’t do it right changing blades can be dangerous.

But then a funny thing happened: in the two or so weeks I’ve had this razor it’s become my absolute favorite, giving me the most comfortable shaves I’ve ever had. And I have probably 13 DE razors, everything from vintage Gillette adjustables to Merkur, Edwin Jagger, Feather and Maggard razors to an Ikon slant. And there are some great razors in that group, so for this thing to end up the winner was absolutely astonishing to me.

This razor gives me incredibly smooth, close shaves, much to my surprise and delight. I think it has a lot to do with the head design which I was initially so against when I first looked at it. Once I opened it I found that under the cap, they use three different methods to hold the blade in place: twin thick posts (which is usually all you get on most heads), central bar, and then two thinner posts near the outside. The result is absolute perfect blade alignment every time, combined with really good blade rigidity that I think contributes to the smoothness.

And as for those other cons I thought were in the product? They really weren’t the big issues I thought they would be. When it comes to the larger head size, I actually ended up appreciating it because it takes less strokes to cover my face, and it hasn’t stopped me from getting into narrow areas like my upper lip (I’ve learned to adjust). I’ve adjusted to lack of knurling as well… at least the razor has an indent in the handle I can use for grip and balancing, and I now that I’m used to it I feel like my grip is as good as any other razor. And it’s true that most of the settings are crazy aggressive, but it’s adjustable and they do have a setting for me: I shave with a 1 (settings range from .5 – 6). On that setting it’s very mild yet close, mild enough for my sensitive skin.

Lastly, is it dangerous to take off the top cap? Can be, if you try to pull it off. Don’t do that. Another shaving forum user recommended laying a towel on the counter, flipping the razor upside down, and pushing down on the sides of the head and letting the top cap just fall into the towel. That works perfect, and if you do it that way your fingers will be nowhere near the blade, removing the danger.

All told, it’s a very interesting razor… they definitely went outside the box on it. But that’s a good thing, because for me at least it shaves better than anything. Five stars, and this may be the first razor ever where I buy a duplicate to have on hand “just in case”, because I would not want to be without this one :).
