Take forever to break in ... tips not soft at all

Omega bristles really take a long time to break in. I've heard guys putting a couple hundred on the brush and still not soft. I've put 25 uses on mine and it's just too scrubby and prickly for me. I much prefer Zeniths and Semogues, because after a few uses, they're no longer killing lather, but are comfy to use. I can then enjoy that comfort while I wait for the tips to split fully. So, with my Omega, I've decided to do a break-in accelerator with the gentle use of a hair dryer after a long soak. I don't enjoy the brush as is, so why not try it? It's cheap, so if it ruins the brush, then no big loss. I wasn't using it anyway. I think a lot of guys who enjoy this brush, without such treatments, just like scritchy brushes, or maybe run their lather pretty dry (which tends to make brushes feel softer than they really are). I go for really wet lathers, so there is little to hide a scritchy tip. And of course this brush, and the other Omegas like it, whip up tons of lather! Their pointy, scritchy tips dig more into the soap than softer brushes. So, Omegas with this kind of bristle -- which is most of them -- aren't a good match for me. But my opinion may change once I abuse this thing trying to break it in. Maybe the tips, when fully split, will give me a brush experience I enjoy.

I received this brush last week. As others mentioned, it does have an odor. I tried a few shampoo's with a charcoal and coconut shampoo and then a vinegar and water soak followed by another shampoo. That "seems" to have helped a bit. The sticker did wash off in the cleaning right away. I have only used drug store brushes until now so I have little to compare but... I soaked the Omega in about a 185 degree water, gave it one squeeze at the middle and lathered with a toothbrush sized portion of Palmolive menthol from a tube and this brush formed a nice lather and then the lather was gone...All into the brush... And it kept the lather through all three passes. Much better than the drug store Van der Hagen brush.

Overall the best boar brush out there, beginners and pros alike could do not wrong with the Omega 89 as their go-to boar brush. Between the size, quality, performance and price - there’s really no better deal. If you’re thinking about trying boar, I’d recommend going with this Omega 49. The loft is longer than the Semogue Owner’s Club but not as long as the Omega Pro 48, and for my skin (which doesn’t like “scritchy” brushes) this makes it perfectly versatile to do both circular motions for face lathering as well as brush strokes. The smell right out of the box was minimal and practically disappeared after the first shave. No hairs lost. The handle is plastic injection molded, so it’s hollow but solidly made and doesn’t feel cheap or flimsy and it’s really comfortable to hold. My favorite boar brush is Omega 21762 but the length of the 48’s loft is a few millimeters shorter which makes for a bit more backbone that’s still extremely comfortable. I received mine last night, left it in the refrigerator overnight with the bristles soaking in water to start breaking it in, used it this morning and instantly loved for comfortable this was. I have about 5 Semogue boar brushes (including the Owner’s Club, 620 and 830) and the Omega 21762 and 98, but this 89 (red) is my new go-to.

"49" is superior to the fabled "48" IMO.The knot is slightly shorter(and after 10-15 shaves does not shed).Because of this it has a little better backbone,so it lathers faster and easier, particularly hard soaps, however it still is king sized enough to treat your face stubs king sizely. The plastic handle has a tool like feel in the hand and adds a color splash. The only problem is the tendency of all large boar brushes to "suck in" the foam and leave the brush "empty" when you attempt second passes. But for 10 dollars who cares?Just load this monster again and eat up more soap.A must for any shaver(along with it's bigger brother of course).

Customer review

This is seriously the best $10.00 I have ever spent shaving. This is a fantastic brush. I was very apprehensive to buy it due to lack of knowledge of Boar brushes. I was worried about stiffness and scratchiness as well as it's large size. I also ordered a smaller Semouge brush in case I didn't like this one. I find this brush actually a perfect size and the Semouge too small for my liking. What can I say? Straight out of the box I played around with it and soaked the brush about 15 minutes and then built a lather with some Stirling Barbershop in my scuttle to clean the brush. BTW, I noticed no initial "animal" odor on this brush. I do notice a very mild mustiness after a couple of uses but it is very faint. Anyway, back to the lather. I was amazed at the amount of thick lather this brush built up in the scuttle. The next morning I shaved with this brush (with an excellent Figaro Gold soap) and was shocked that it was much softer than I anticipated. If it never got any softer I would be satisfied. I can only imagine how good it will feel when broke in. I have always used badger brushes as I was swayed away by reports of boar brush stiffness and roughness. No more of those worries now. I seriously doubt I will ever buy another badger brush as long as I can get a boar brush this quality for this price. I highly recommend the Pro 49. You actually CAN get a great brush for a fantastic value!
